Looking for opinions

Ok here is a good one for you guys. I have an 86 K5 with a basicly stock drive train...IE TBi 350 700r4 and 208. ANYWAY i am a certified diesel mechanic and have been for nearly 14 years. A buddy of mine at work scrapped out a first generation dodge dually with....yup you guessed it...the first generation mechanical 12 valve cummins 5.9. As of now i can get and have called dibs on the engine, radiator and aftercooler for basicly a song. Engine runs good no smoke no oil usage. What i am considering is trying to find a first generation 4x4 dodge diesel auto tranny and transfer case and shoe horn this thing into the K5. We are talking MONSTER torque and could be alot of fun. Anyway i was wondering what everyones opinion would be on something like this. I have the know how. Might be tight on the fab equipment for motor mounts, cross members and the such but GAWD i think this thing would be freakin fun. Please guys weigh in and give me your opinions.

Thanks,
Big Lonnie

It has been done with that year model chevy before, so there is likely some info available if you search for it.

Personally, I would find a nv4500 or 5600 to put behind that thing with a np205 transfer case.

Be sure to keep in mind that the cummins probably weighs 2x or more than the 350, so you will need to do some suspension ugrades also. It would also probably be a good idea to beef up the frame while you're at it.

Also, if you still have the 10 bolt out back it wont be too happy.

Go for it and I would go for the nv5600. And like 4x4freak says get rid of the 10 bolt rear and go for a 14 bolt which are super cheap.

I have scored the tranny but it was a standard not sure which one. The axle was a dually however i have now gotten my hands on the rear axle for a 99 f350 super duty disc brakes and all

99 superduty is going to have the metric bolt pattern. I would suggest trying to trade it for something else with a standard bolt pattern.

First gen. std. should be the getrag. Not the best, but will probably be ok. Also, a divorced t-case might be tight in a blazer. I had issues with the driveshaft angles in my K10, but I also tucked it up into the frame rails. It wont be as bad if you mount it lower; I wanted as much clearance as I could get.

i am more leaning toward finding a th400/NP205 setup. The old chevy step vans had 4b cummins backed with the TH400 so the flywheel and mounting adapters are easy enough to get. I could then just take the step van th400 and rebuild it/modify it with the 4 wheel drive output shaft and housing to accept the NP205. I have kinda decided this is the direction i am going

I agree with 4x4freak, definately beef the frame up while you are at at. If anything brace it up around the steering box, that much more weight is going to put a lot more stress on it and in stock form they have enough trouble handling anything bigger than stock sized tires it seems. Th400 is a stout tranny, but that 6b has got some grunt so I would throw some goodies at that thing too. It will be one of those swaps that nickel and dime the hell out of you but it will be sweet

I am definitely gonna box out the frame possibly all the way back. Also want to beef up the cross member under the engine and the tranny mount. It will be a ways off before i can start this due to financing and having to find axles, tranny, tcase and so forth but i wanted to see what everyone thought and if there was a consesus on wether it would actually be a worth wild mod.

I actually think ORD or Advance Adapters has a kit for this swap. Nothing wrong with that Sterling axle you have, but as was mentioned, you will have a 8x170mm bolt pattern, which basically commits you to either an adapter to go to the 8x6.5" pattern, or using a ball-joint SuperDuty Dana 60 up front so you have matching bolt patterns.
