Mid 80's chevy carb question

On my 85 gmc the carb has an electric plug on the top of it. Does anyone know what it does? It's not the chocke wire.

It is so that you know you need to replace carb and distibuter with pre computer controlled stuff.Atleast that was what it always told me and that was how I fixed it If that stuff is unplugged or non functional the carb will run too rich.

If its on the drivers side, it's a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor).
If its on the passengers side, it's a cold air enrichment solenoid. It richens the mixture in cold weather for faster starts and better idle.

The carb will still function if they are unplugged. The solenoid is only applied when it's energized (hooked to voltage), so if it's unplugged and running rich, it's NOT the problem.

I have swapped electronic carbs to older vehicles several times without a problem. But keep in mind, carburetors DO wear out, the throttle shaft wears out, the vacum secondaries wear out. If it has 200k on it, then it's probably junk. This is the #1 problem with Q-Jets, people expect them to last forever.

So then I a safe to assume that if I put a Carter on it most of the emission crap will still work? It does not have a problem yet and most of the emission stuff is still hooked up.

The smog stuff will still work (provided it works in the first place). It's not affected by the carburetor.

The electronics are mainly for better drivability, not emissions.

On the vehicles with a TPS, if it's unhooked, the check engine light will come on. But your truck probably doesn't have one, I think it was only on 86-87 California models.

Swampthang just gettin started
If you replace the carb, you will need to disconnect the four wire plug on the pass. side of the dist. and splice the A and C wires together on the dist. side pigtail {the connector is marked A B C D**. Leave the connector unplugged and time normally. either that or replace the module with one for a '79 350. If you don't then the timing will be erratic.
