Question More Power Without Breaking the Bank

As my name implies, i have an 88 ford truck w/ a 351 windsor in it. I was wondering what things could be done to increase power w/o tearing into the motor too drastically. You see, I already have a free flowing intake and exhaust, as well as an MSD 6a box. The factory fuel injection (speed density) is pretty sensitive and I don't reall want to spend the 600-700 dollars on the mass air conversion. I've also thought of gearing it down hella due to its lack of power. I've noticed most of you guys are chevy fans, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You look like you have done all of the important and needed mods to open up an engine........I always loved the speed density setups, chevy that is....The next thing would be a cam swap or a rebuild......

This your DD or toy? If you can handle the gas mileage on the highway, I say gear it. If not, go for the less effective and more expensive cam/heads.

The solution is easy. Junk the 351 and swap in a 460.

hmm

Electric fans may be good for 5 HP but will put a higher drain on the alt. and battery. Maybe a throttle body change or a spacer but other than that the camshaft change and maybe a little head porting and polishing. The gearing change sounds like the best noticeable bang for the bucks IMHO if this is not your DD.

power

Well, first off, this is not my daily driver, second, I spoke with my neighbor (who ownes his own shop) who pretty much knows everything about ford fuel injection, and he told me that the cam, head, and possibly intake change would be great if I had a mass airflow setup, otherwise the factory computer would just be guessing on the amount of fuel to use and more than likely start dumping fuel in to compensate for the lean mixture that was going to be picked up by the o2 sensor (say good bye to decent fuel mileage, or what ever fuel mileage I would be getting). So, gears are sounding pretty good right now, but therein lies another question, what gears would work best with a 41-42" tire? I was thinking somewhere in the 5.13-5.38 range. Oh yeah, my truck has overdrive too(cough...6.17). And as 4x4Freak stated "put a 460 in it" that would be great, but I spent a lot of time and effort (and$$$) finding and installing the current set up I have now, I'd hate to start over, unless it was for a diesel. HMMMMM.....

Since it is not your dd

You might want to check out those 6.17:1 gears because they sure look wimpy. I was going to go with them until they got here and I saw how small and how few teeth the pinion gear had on it so I went with 5.86:1 Not sure there is a 5.86 for the Sterling. If you do the setup yourself the ring and pinion should run you less than $200 per axle plus the install kit and the gear lube, not too bad for what should be enough gear to turn those 40 to 42" tires.

if you can afford it swap out the intake manifold for a trick flow setup, and put a bigger edelbrock, or something of the like throttle body on it, this made a huge difference on my friends, 87 bronco., and while you got it kinda aprt try and maybe smooth the intake and exhaust ports on the heads if they arent perfectly smooth, maybe get a set of underdrive pulleys, do you have an h or x pipe installed in your exhaust system? that really woke up my dual exhaust. a small cam wouldnt be to expensive either, jsut make sure you dont get one to big that is gonna piss the speed density crap off. can you get a engine power program for that yr, motor?

I started looking around for misc. things (trying to get a price and an idea of how much i would spend) and found that it would be waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper to do the gears than buying an intake ($500-600), heads that flow decent (gt-40 iron $300 locally, alum. $800-1000), tb,cam, etc. however I did think about ordering 1.7 roller rockers in place of the 1.6's from the factory. As for my exhaust, right now I have 1 5/8" smog legal headers that go into 2.5" pipes into a flowmaster 3" "y pipe" no cat, 40 series and a turndown. It's not very restrictive hehehe. As for a programmer, my neighbor knows Mike Murillo (www.murillomotorsports.com/) pretty well and he said that they can burn me a chip once I get to a point in which I feel I don't need to mod anything any more.
