MotorCraft 2100 carb vs Chevy TBI

I am at a crossroads on my Jeep, I have a motorcraft 2100 (original carb) that works, needs a rebuild though. Engine has no hesitation when you hit the throttle, and doesnt miss a beat, just has a rough idle due to fuel issues (stuck needle and seat, leaky gaskets).

Also I have basically all of the Chevy 350 TBI stuff to convert to TBI, including a stock 7747 350 computer.

I am debating what route to go to allow the Jeep to perform at angles and not spit and sputter and die, or catch fire. MANY people swear by the 2100, that they will run at any angle imagineable, and never miss a beat, while other say carbs suck period... For the time being, I would prefer to rebuild the carb, install a regulator/pressure gauge/ return line setup and call it good. I just dont want to drag this thing halfway across Texas to Trees in a few weeks and it be a complete turd. To be 100% honest I can dump $100 into a the carb/reg/gauge and be set and know it will work and run good, I'm not 100% sure I can slap the 350 TBI on and be sure it will work as well without computer mods. Any advice here guys?? Firsthand experience with the 2100?

I have a 2100 on my buggy right now. It needs a rebuild kit as well. For the most part I have been very happy with it. It has done very well at steep climbs and sidehills. I started running it because of the way a buddy's Jeep always performed with a 2100 on it. I have seen him lay his over almost completely on its side and he kept going until he had to stop for lack of oil pressure. The tbi would be better for sure but if it were me I would put it on when I had plenty of time to get it on and make a few test runs to work out any kinks.

I've ridden with a guy from lubbock that had a 2100 on a 351, and I would have called him a liar if I hadn't seen the thing. We were laid over on the side, nose up, nose down, etc and it purred like a kitten. That being said, FI will be better, depending on how much BS the swap turns into.

I upgraded from a Qjet to TBI, actually swapped complete engines. Mine has been all angles except laid over and never had any problems with the engine continuing to run, unless the suction line loses fuel.

It's likely you wouldn't get the FI system together in 2 weeks though. Stay with the cheapest, easiest system until you have a need to upgrade.

Thanks, thats pretty much my thoughts on it. The TBI harness I have has been cleaned and modified and is ready for my Jeep, and I have all sensors etc. for it, just need to lockout the distributer timing and wire it all up. I have a 4 barrel to TBI adapter plate, so that would be no issue. My biggest concern is tuning/ elimination of the EGR (will have a CEL). I would prefer to do the TBI swap and have it tuned and a custom chip burned for the 304, so it would take a period of time to do that. I think I will stick with the 2100 for now, try it at Trees and see how it does. If all goes well there, leave it ( I intend to have a 350 in this next year), if it gives me issues, then I will move forward with the TBI swap before katemcy in June..

Sounds like you only have time frame for the carb. Rebuilt it and fix you fuel supply problems. Shouldnt cost that much or time.
Ive seen alot of rigs run carbs. But the trick was a hand throdle. To ideal the motor up. Really helps when you have a standard trans.

What motor you running?

Its a Jeep 304 v8/ tf999 auto. Looks like I am going to stick witht he 2100.. The one I have has all the BS removed (choke etc..) It is just a plain ol simple 2 barrel carb. I am going to slap a rebuild kit in it, adjust the float level, and let it run.. I will be plumbing in a regulator to regulate down to 4-5 psi, an filter with return line and a pressure gauge as well.. I think I will be fine with that.

Ran a 2100 on a jeep I had and it ran pretty good. Injection will be a better setup in the long run, but until you have alot of tubing and don't care if you are upside down or not, the 2100 should do ya great! I run propane now, and have had zero issues out of that setup. Have seen quite a few injection systems be a pain in the butt until all the kinks are worked out. So all that being said, it sounds like you are on the right track with trying the rebuild for now.
