Newbie question on used 350

A friend of mine knows a guy who has a used 350 shortblock bored .30 over. Apparently he was gonna use it in his truck but found 383 and that instead. He has a set off heads that he said need to be magnafluxed? something like that. Anybody have any ideas on what I should look at before buying it?

If it is just the short block I would check the cyclinders for wear. Check to see if there is any ridge in any of them. That should give you a pretty good idea of how worn the motor is. You should probably pull the caps off and check the bearings as well. Not the best practice but you can pull one at a time, inspect that side then put it back and retorque.

First of all just look at it......does it look all ratty and crap? Run your fingernail up the bore and see if there is a ring groove up by the top, if there is walk away.......unless you wanna rebuild it. But if it is .030 over already you may not be able to clean it up with a .040 overbore. Ive run .060 motors in race cars but they run hot most of the time. Look at the bottom end, wiggle the rods on the crank, look for machine marks on the crank.....might say .010/.010 or something like that if it has been into before. As stated pull the rod caps and look for any abnormal wear, spun rod bearings, etc.

As far as the heads go magnafluxing is a process that defines cracks. I wouldnt think he knows anything about the heads if he is saying they needed to be Magnafluxed, or maybe he got it hot and suspects cracks or something.

Why did he pull it? EDIT, I see he is doing the stroker thing, nevermind.
