Nv3500

wats yalls view on the nv3500 as far as holding up to abuse/power/big tires?

ive heard yes and no, im in the process of restoring my s10, and im plannen on a beefed up 4.3 w/ vortec heads, SAS with wagoneer axles, and some 33's or 35's depending on how much room the SAS will give me... granted ive never had a problem with my tranny, even considering the s10 was my first vehicle, so it was teenage abused pretty well... ive had ppl tell me the 3500 wont hold up at all, and ive had others say that it will...

wat do yall think?

Go directly to jail. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.00. They are commonly known as GETRAG's and aren't worth a dime to real wheeling. Save your pennies and get the NV4500.

If you're just using it for a DD, then the Getrag would be fine. Don't stress it by doing burnouts, etc., as that leads to premature gear failure. They aren't the strongest tranny by any means.

I had one in a reg cab 4.3 C1500. It whined really bad and the synchros were shot (I abused it quite a bit), but it always shifted good and never gave me trouble. Even pulled my Jeep on a trailer with it several times. I'd use it.

They are not gettag's. Gertag's are the 5speeds that came in the flat nose I-gen dodges. NV3500 and NV4500 are a hole new line brand of trannys.

Back to the subject.
The nv3500 well do fine for DD. If you start shift gears hard you'll end up popping one of the plastic type gears in them. There not a solid metal gear. There wierd if you ever seen one. They help with shifting and gear niose.

I know i went thorw 3 of them. In my 97 4x4 V8 dodge on 37's. I upgraded to a nv4500. Them trannys are not cheap to rebuild when one blows.

Totally different tranny there buddy, Getrag and nv tranny's are 2 different animals. As for getrags being no good, this is again untrue, they are plenty stout, stout enough to handle the 12V intercooled 5.9. The killer on a getrag is that they were not designed to be ran at the angle dodge put them at, when you run the correct amout of oil in em it starved the front bearing.. Add 1 extra qt and you are good to go.

As for the nv3500, you should be fine with it, much stronger than a t4/t5/sr4 and those things can handle big tires just fine. With the 4.3, and 33's or 35's, you should have 0 worries.

The 3500 is a fairly stout transmission. As long as you don't abuse it it'll probably be ok. They used to put them behind 350s so they can handle a decent amount of torque. My old S10 had one in it and I loved that transmission, except for the lack of a low gear. It was behind a 4.3, but I didn't baby it either. I probably had almost as many miles on it towing heavy loads as it did empty and I never had any problems out of it.

If you do blow it up I would definitely replace it with something stronger.

i think just about any tranny will be fine behind a six banger, its kinda hard to tear up a built standard tranny and dd anyways

With a quick search I found they are rated for about 300 ft/lbs of input torque. Unless you dump a whole lot of money into a 4.3 (believe me I know) that's about what you'll be making with a mild build.

Pretty much all the info you need on a 3500.

good sites 4x4freak... learned alot ofa them... apparently wat i thot was a nv3500 in my s10, is actually a 5LM60(according to the site)... granted the HM290, 5LM60, and NV3500 look identicle, but the internals are different... and im assuming that MY2 is just an RPO code?

the only thing that confuses me now, is on MITCHELL ON DEMAND it lists a 5LM60, and NV3500 for my 91 s10.... if the 3500 didnt come out till 93, then y would it b listed on mitchell?

Yes, the MY2 is an RPO code.

Pull it apart and see if it has 4 shift rails or one. I wouldn't worry about it if it's working, they are both pretty much the same transmission for the most part.

Sorry guys, but the NV3500 is known as the Getrag. Do a google search on it and you'll see that the there are several variants of Getrag's available, including the NV3500 / HM290 / 5LM60. Either way you slice it, all the reports on these tranny's are that they aren't worth a hill of beans.

Getrag is a manufacturer, same as New Venture Gear is. From what I understand, the MG290 was produced by Getrag, and the NV3500 by New Venture. While very similar in design, they are still different transmissions.

Calling a NV transmission a Getrag is like calling a klune V/Dana 300 doubler an Atlas 4-speed. While they are similar in design, they aren't the same thing.

Search more, those look the same externally but are different internally.. Calling them all nv3500's is like calling and SBC a 350.. Just because externally they are teh same, internally they have differences.

here are four GM medium duty transmission designs that led to and are often mistaken for the NV3500:
  • 1987 MG-290
  • 1988 HM-290 HM= Hydramatic / Muncie
  • 1989 5LM60 (early)
  • 1991 NVG 5LM60 (late) NVG= New Venture Gear
  • 1993[1] New Venture Gear releases the NV3500. Externally the earlier GM units "look like" the NV3500 however internal components were
  • extensively re-designed

    • The HM290 and 5LM60 units have a complicated arrangement of 4 shift rails. The NV3500 has one shift rail.[2]
    • There are two designs for the 5LM60 input shaft and bearings (input shaft and main shaft). The first design 1988–1990 has a ball bearing with a roller bearing behind it. The second design has a much larger single ball bearing. The first design bearings are reputed to be failure prone.[3] The updated input shaft and bearings carried through to the NV3500.

Explain to me how if they are exact same tranny , then nv3500 is the only 1 with 1 shift rail?? Just because some people refer to things incorrectly, doesn't mean we all have too.

behind a v6 you will be just fine with this tranny, there are much weaker trannys out there to be more worried about than the nv3500.

I have a nv4500 with a V8 bellhouse on ii with about 35,000 miles on it. And a np231hd behind with the same mileage. I'll sale the tranny for $2500 or the hole truck for $3000. 97 Ram 4x4 318mag/300hp 4.56's and 35's but well clear 38's.
