nv4500 question

I was wondering what the difference is between a 2wd nv4500 and a 4wd model? Is it just the tailshaft and tailhousing? I want to have a nv4500 in my new rig because of the overdrive, but the 4wd model trannys are outragious for one in decent condition, so I figured I could pick one of these up for cheap and convert it to a 4wd model by swapping out the shafts and drilling out the rivets and taking off the tailhousing? Whats your opinion? Will this work, and is there any internal strength differences between these transmissions?
