Opinions please!

I need advice on what to do next. I drive from SA to Austin everyday for my job. One day the engine in my boxvan gave out north of New Braunfels. So my boss decided to tow me into San Marcos to a place called Franks Auto. They told us we needed a new engine. Ok, no problem. We got it back after the engine swap and paying $6500. The day we got it back, I noticed that the engine temp goes over 210 when you get above 40-45 mph. Not very much but when I turn on the A/C, the temp goes way up. I never saw the temp do this before the engine blew. Not once! Franks tells me that I need to replace the radiator. Even though it does not leak, has been flushed every winter.

Next problem: We have changed the oil twice since the engine swap. Most recently on Saturday the 14 of August. Every Monday I check the fluids, air pressure, lights ect. Monday the oil was full. Today I get a low oil light. Stop and check the oil and I am 2 quarts low. At least thats how many I had to put n before it was full on the stick. I cannot find any leaks anywhere. Oil does not just disappear.

Now this van is a 2004 Chevy Express 3500, with 340,000 miles. Why would the new engine run hot and the old, wore out engine run cool? This is really frustrating. What do I do?

What engine and transmission?

If the radiator is full and the belt is on the water pump, check the tension of the belt.

Maybe take the thermostat out to see if it's not opening.

I'd hate to say it, but when I saw the $6500.00 price tag, my jaw dropped and I thought the same thing. I just didn't want to say it. Y'all got ripped, just like a senior citizen who needed an oil change on their RV and instead got a new axle, transmission and engine overhaul.

It has a 6.0 engine, dont know tranny, but will find out. I recently had to change the alternator and was able to get the belt good and tight. Franks did replace the water pump, even though I put a new pump on in Feb. They were advised of this too.

I did forget to mention, the price includes replacing both exhaust manifolds because they were broke. Still too expensive.

They say we have a 1 year warranty, but we cant get them to do anything because they want us to replace the radiator. They didnt tell us about that, they just told us that when we took it back for running too hot. And they cant tell me why I lost 2 quarts of oil in one day. Oil pressure was good until today.

My thing is, why is it running hot now, and not before? Swap was done in July and starting running hot as soon as I got on the freeway.

What should I do? I am waiting for a call from the owner, Frank himself, but I dont know what I can make them do. I DO know that they are getting bad reviews from me online on every review site I can find and have complained to the BBB of central Texas. We will see what happens.

It's called small claims court bro. $10,000.00 limit in the state of Texas. Give the owner one chance to make it right. If he you off, then send him a summons, then put a mechanics lean on his shop. That'll fix his wagon.

Loosen the bolts to the radiator, re-tighten and take it back and tell them it has been flushed and it is still no better. Ask for the documentation for the 'new' engine (where they bought it from). If that doesn't get it rolling, run it out of oil and take it back in like was stated. Start keeping a daily log of checking/filling the oil so you can show them what is going on.

For that kind of money, you could have bought a couple of JY 6.0's and been better off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can include lawyer fees in a suit.

It is standard procedure for the plaintiff to sue for attorney fees but they are not awarded, at least that is what I have seen when a ***** pile company like progressive insurance has a client that runs my *** over (no tickets issued), pays me for the damages to my vehicle then tries to sue me 23 months later. Sorry for the rant but retainer attorney's usually sue for damages when they know it may get settled outside of court so they have more bargaining leverage.

I just hope this truck will be fixed!!! I would like to find a mechanic that will treat me, if not everyone fair. This not my truck, but I drive it so my boss will be able to pay me. He hired me because I can fix most stuff easily, and not charge him alot. I also thought that I may be over reacting about the issues I have had but you folks have prompted me to get local quotes and even the dealer (Gunn Chevy) has quoted Under $4500 for the work we had done.

I told the boss today that he needs to trade that thing in on another truck, so we will see what happens. He has been talking about a bigger truck, because of prospective new contracts. My boss had to lay me off for a month, but as soon as he had work for me, he called me back. I have alot of respect for him and want him to get a square deal.
Now I see he got screwed. Thanks for the input! Wont take the easy way out next time.
