Please help me diagnose my probelm before I go crazy....

Okay so here is the deal. Have 84 k5 that originally had a 700r4/208 combo. When I bought the truck it had a bad grinding noise while coasting around 40 to 50 mph. Since then I have swaped from 10 bolts to a Dana44 front and 14 bolt rear. The rear originally had a set of 3.73 gears but the pinion earing ate itself sothe gear set was bad. I bought a set of used gears and put them i there. The the grinding was still there so I drove it for a while and till the 700r4 gave out. Then swaped In a sm465/208 to fix that problem. Now that I am done with the swap the grinding was still there. So yesterday I took it to a local shop and had them put in a new set of 4.56 gears to fix what I tjught was the problem. I had never set up a rear end before so I thought the grinding was from not having the gears set up right but I guess I did a better job than I had thought. Anyways the same grindng sound is still there. There is no front drive shaft so I don't think it's the front because the hubs are un locked. The drive shaft in the rear is the original on from the truck but has been extended 2inches for the lift and the new rear axle. I don't remember telling them to replace the ujoint atthe slip yoke so would a bad ukoit make this sound? If it's just the ujoint I will be happy but if anybody has any ideas of what it could be please speek up. Anny input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you swapped everything but the motor already. Could it be the fan rubbing on something? Also are you sure your tires are not rubbing the inner fenders?

It's def. Not the fan. I can feel some vibration at my feet but I don't think it's really out of the ordinary. But I could be completetly wrong. This isy first project and I'm still learning.

It's not the tires either. They only rub when I'm off road.

Nothing on the steering wheel. Nothing that seems out of the ordinar on the floorboard.

Push the brake and it still grinds.

Dosent do it in reverse because I can't get going fast enough. It only does it a 40 to 50 mph.

Didn't over fill them. Put 4.5 liters of gear oil in the tranny and enough atf in the tcase to come out the fill whole.

When I put on the rear I repacked all the bearings andchecled them for where and theylook to be on good condition. Not much slop at all.

Sound is a grinding of metal on metal. Sounds likegear on gear contact but it daly loud and only while coasting.

Do you have a CV rear driveshaft or a single joint at each end?

If it is a CV the pinion end should be inline with the shaft otherwise your eating up the center ball in the CV.

If it is a standard single joint at each end shaft the output of the Tcase and the pinion should be equal yet oppisite angles. So that if you draw a line though them they are parellel.

Other than that make sure that nothing is rubbing on moving parts.

It's got some angle too it but it dosent look bad. I will snap some pics of it tommorow to see what you guys think. It has 4in blocks in the rear with little bit of angle that points the pinokn to the tcase but not very much.

Little bit of vibrating ing the tranny shifter but nothing really noticeable. I will hold on to the tcase shifter next time and see If I feel any vibration.

if it dosnt do it when you heavy on the gas and doesnt do it while downshifting then its normal wear and tair on the gears . i wouldnt worrie about it . just sounds to me thats the gears are a little wore out . it might be the tcase wore down a little . try changing the oil to a little thicker oil . i put 80w120 royle purple in everything that has gears .

Its not a double cardon joint. It's got a single ujoint on each end.

I had the gears cheacked out by the shop before they put them I and they said they were ingood condition.

Its not a soft sound. I get looks from people on the side of the street so I know they can hear it. Its pretty loud.

Had a buddy of mine ride in the rear and he aiad it sounded louder at the front. I haven't even started to mess with the front end yet. Could I be something vibrating like a broken shaft or ring and pinion? I haven't even popped the cover it yet.

have you had someone watch the front end to make sure its not turning the axle when you drive. I have had some hubs break internaly before and bind up and it kept the front end locked in evan though the hubs said unlocked.

Seems you have just about ruled everything out except u-joints and front axle. Quick check would be to pull your locking hubs off. There may be one of them staying locked and turning a shaft. I would replace the u-joints either way if they have been in that long, just for some peace of mind.

I will check the hubs when I get home tonight. I know one of them is broken so I took out the broken part and stuck it back on there to keep out water. The shop did tell me that the unjoint on my drivers side needs to be replaced so I am going to replace both sides while I'm at it. Right now there is no front driveshaft because I have 3.73s in the front and 4.56s in the rear but that dosent mean the front end is not turning still.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll be back on later tonight with some pics and answers.

Pull both hubs and go take it for a drive. See if it is still there. May want to duct tape the ends closed so grease doesn't fly everywhere.

drive shaft is out of balance. mine did it for years because i built it. finally decided to get a new professional one built and it solved all my problems. its an awlful grinding rubbing sound when you let out of the gas and coast. the noise is branded in my head still to this day.
