problem

Working on a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 Magnum gas engine. The engine will turn over but will not run unless you hold the throttle body wide open and then it runs very rough for about 5 seconds and dies. I have replaced the TPS, the cap and rotor, the plugs and the coil wire all of which were either cracked or in bad shape. Tried to plug my OBD II diagnostic tool into the connector and it did nothing, the tool is good because I plugged it into my Kia and my Titan and it read both of them fine. Did a compression test and it was fine. The fuel pressure is good. This seems like an electrical malfunction but without the diagnostic tool I am lost here. Any ideas? I do not want to start just replacing parts especially the computer. Yes I know you are not supposed to hold the throttle body open at all on fuel injected but was just trying to " see what would happen". The throttle body on this has only 3 electronic parts, the TPS, the idle air controller and the MAP sensor. It has injectors in each run of the intake manifold near the head and the injectors voltage tested good and I used a noid on them also which I modified for use on a Dodge.

I had a 99 chevy that had a laundry list of problems like what you described. Before going any further try checking and cleaning all the ground points from the computer to the engine and all the way to the frame. Check all of them. When they put them together at the factory they don't always clean the paint or powder coat of of the ground points.

Ok

I did check all the fuses and relays under the hood and at the inside of the dash by the door. I did not check and clean those grounds, a bad thing considering I always give that as advice to folks having strange problems, will do the ground cleaning this evening.
Any other ideas?

I had a very similar problem happen on an LX Mustang V8. And I know this sounds bad, but I sprayed a small burst of starting fluid into the throttle body and it started right up and died. Computer was bad.

Secondly, on computer based cars/trucks, I have found that the IAC is more problematic than the TPS, but like you said replacing sensors gets EXPENSIVE........

My cousin has that 2001 and I can see if I can borrow his computer. I will be at the Jamboreee this weekend......I know his totaled Dodge runs.........

hmmm, maybe it is the operator????????? if you know what I mean!!!

where I work, as the "used to be and still am the maintenance guy" I blame everything on OE (operator error).

I know this doesnt help with the problem but thought you might need some humor in your life.

see you on friday I guess.

I'm going to Fogo De Chau tonight, Texas De Brazil tomorrow night and then Master grill on friday night. Looks like I'll be putting on some weight and eating some of the best damn food ever this week.

ok

Oh it is operater error all right, dope head drivers and no respect for a machine. She runs it low on oil all the time and they have driven it like they stole it. Of course when mommy and stepdaddy are footing all the bills and repairs.........
Anyway, I hope I will be eating at Master Grill friday with you unless y'all planned on going without dear old dad.
Jonas and I brainstormed on this thing and we have come up with a probable Crankshaft position sensor being the problem although the IAC circuit checked good with the multi meter I may try it next if it is not the CPS.
If not those 2 things then it must be the computer or a broken wire. I cleaned every ground point on the thing and no luck there.

Just got home from Fogo De Chao, EXCELLENT!!! and free to me.

I also worked a "business trip" to Canada this summer for free of course, we are gonna spend 1 hour in the office and 4 days partying in Montreal sometime in july. Cant wait, I've been to canada twice for business before and did nothing but work while I was there and hated it, this guy says he will change all of my prior impressions of canada for good.

oldgoat: yes, master grill friday night was planned to spend with you for your 50th birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tonight was a free meal from a vendor that I use.

tomorrow night is mine and brandy's 3rd anniversary

Check the coolant temp sensor. They cause all kinds of problems.
