Propane question

I have an old farm truck with a 454 running on a Impco 300A Dual fuel mixer. Only problem is that it will only run without the air cleaner on. As soon as you put the air cleaner on it will not start. Any ideas? I have played with the rich lean adjustment and still couldn't get it to start. I don't plan on running gas so I know i should get a 425 mixer but funds are short and I would like to make what i have work for now.

yes replacing the filter is what started the mess. the old filter was trash and cloged but the truck would start with it on. I put a new filter on and the truck no start.....teach me to try and change a filter again....

is the fuel shut off to the gas carb? just off the top of my head but mite be trying to run both at the same time.

Well if I had not read the whole story I would say that the 300 is not giving the 454 enough air but after reading it all I have no freakin idea. Put the old filter back on....

Truck runs and drives pretty good without the air cleaner.

Is it the same size filter or is it too tight around the mixer to restrict the air.

Same size filter, I wonder is a low restriction filter would make it work.

On that model, do the air cleaner bolts hold the Impco together? If so, the diaphragm might have slipped internally.

Have you tried to put the filter on while its running. Is the bottom of the filter touching the distribiter or any of the ckoke or thoudle cable..if it runs fine without a filter . Then it has nothing to do with the filter.

The lean rich adjust is for full power, in the center on top should be a plug, pull it and under it is the low speed/idle mix adjust. The diaphragm needs to sense air flow when cranking before it starts delivering fuel, so definitely check the diaphragm if it has set for a while.
