Recomend me some Heads...

I need to get a set of heads for a 454, what can the engine guys recommend? There are a few different options in aluminum, but what brand do you guys like to work with?

Looking for a 270cc intake and ~110cc combustion chamber to help keep the torque and compression ratio up.

I've always used World Product heads. The are priced right and deliver good power. I've never ran them on a big block though, but I bet the Merlin heads would be good for you. I had a buddy run some edelbrock aluminum Performer Rpm heads on his 468 and he liked them. Just depends on budget.

Go with GM 781 casting number. Cheap and easy to get. Dang hard to beat too.

Most of the cast iron heads, stock or aftermarket, run in the 117cc - 119cc range. The 049s are around 122cc if memory serves. If you're looking to get down close to 110cc, you can have them milled down...keep in mind that milling them down can affect your pushrod length. Bigger valves will also reduce the combustion chamber. The most effective way to reduce the combustion chamber size is a larger domed piston.

Edelbrock does give you some options on the aluminum side with varying options for combustion chamber sizes. But be prepared to spend some $$. Probably twice as much as you would for most cast heads.

For low to mid range torque, you'll want to stick with big oval ports

For what its worth, I'm running flat top pistons with Edelbrock Performer High Compressions (100cc chamber). My compression works out to just under 10:1 on a 460.

We have been looking for a set, but the ones I have been finding will need enough work done to them that for just a few more dollars I can get a new set of aluminum's.

Don't you just love it when someone posts up a thread, asks for advice, then completely and utterly disregards EVERYONE's advice???

I went with a set of Patriot Performance Freedom Series heads from Summit.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PAR-2211/

They seemed to do a good job in this write up, and fit the budget nicely.
http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...ild/index.html

The options were wide open, and no one in this thread had anything to say negative about any of the brands, so I went out on a limb with these. With the 596hp/598tq numbers they made with the 496 stroker kit in that engine (which is the plan for this engine next year hopefully) w/ the carb on it, I figure that we should be able to break the 600/600 mark with the fuel induction we have in the works.

If I were building a BBC for anything other than a high RPM strip car it would get 781's.

We were definitely headed down that road when we started looking a couple of weeks ago, but were only finding ones that needed complete rebuilds or lots of work. By the time we would have spent money on purchase, delivery/pickup, and rebuild it would have been 'close' to the purchase price on a set of aluminums. Going with the al. it should keep the weight down comparable to the 350 it is replacing, and to me that is just as important as the rest in this sport. Even though I have some bling bling shafts up front, doesn't mean I don't want to try and give them as much chance to survive that I can.
