running out of power

So if i'm correct, here's what i got... Chevy 305 with TH350/203. All time four wheel drive... the issue i'm having at the moment is it seems that once i get to third i'm running out of power... i'm not sure if its due to carb issues, tranny issues, or a combination of what i got. what do yall think? should i upgrade the engine, the tranny, or both? or is there another combination that better suits the street machine with the occasional offroad/mudtrail?

What ratio is in the axles and what size tire are you running?

The 305 is not a power house by anymeans. how many miles on the engine? Does it have good compression, proper timing, good plugs and wires, Carb to small or to big, full range of movent in the throttle? There are multitudes of things that could be sapping it down.

all of those are good questions... i don't have the time or know how to tear into the axles and figure out what my gear ratios are... i'm running 31/16/10.5 bfg all terrains... the carb on the engine has some issues... maybe thats where i'm losing... no idea about the miles though...

Easy way to get a rough idea of the gear ratio is to disconect the driveshaft and jack up the rear. Turn the tire by hand and count how many times it goes around to make the pinion yoke go around once.

Say the tire makes 4 revs. and the pinon makes 1. you have 4:10.

But running 31's should not effect it.

After seeing your carb post check for a vacume leak. the only two lines you realy need is the one going to the dist. and the one going to the PCV on the valve cover. Block off the rest with rubber cap nipples.

By running out of power do you mean you can't go very fast? or it feels like the trans is slipping?

get a 454 and a bowtie built 700r4 coupled to a atlas, a set of 1 tons with 5:13's and 44's.. that should keep a smile on your face for a while

No need to disconnect the shaft; just put the t-case in neutral.

Also, if the truck still has the options sticker it will usually say what the ratio is. If it has a d44 front it should also have a metal tag on one of the diff bolts that has the gear ratio stamped on it. I've never seen a corp. axle with the tag.

i mean that it'll get up and go (when my floats arent stuck) through all three gears but it seems like once i make it to third i could leave the pedal on the floor and it just doesnt go any faster after a certain point... im wondering if thats the limitation of three gears or the engine running out of power....

how fast? Is it possible its stuck in low range? Does the engine sound like the rpms are up or is it to the floor and the rpms are not up?

Sounds like you're in low range.

aside from all of that. Have some one jump in the truck and push the pedal to the floor. Engine off....and check under to hood to insure that the throttle cable is pulling the carb to WOT. just to rule that out. Maybe you will get lucky and have to adjust the throttle cable and be happy.

I would adjust the transfer case shifter, and spray some oil down inside the shifter, or take it apart and clean and oil it. it sounds like you are either in low range or the trans is slipping, but I bet your problems with the front not engaging and no power are cause the case is not shifting correctly, and stuck in low, and possibly stuck somewhere between loc and highway, maybe causing the front not to engage.

one of the other things i noticed today is that it seems like the secondary isn't opening at all... does anyone has a diagram on how the secondary is supposed to be hooked up?? the rear part of the carb does not seem to open at all...

You will probably never see the secondaries open up unless you can look under the hood while you are driving. They are vacuum controlled, so they only open up when you stop on it and the engine is under a load.
