Drivetrain is a 91 tbi 350/ late model hydro bell sm465/ 203/205 doubler. I just got everything back together for the first time last week. The trans came out of a running/driving truck off of a fresh rebuild so I was told by a fairly reliable source. I installed a new 12" clutch from o'rieleys. The flywheel has been turned and it is the thick style with the 168 tooth flywheel teeth, and I installed a new bronze pilot bushing, and throwout bearing. All parts were order for a 1986 chevy k30.

The hydro system is a stock chevy slave to a aftermarket 3/4" bore master and a aftermarket wilwood style reverse swing pedal that is mounted to the firewall.

Now for some back story. At first after bleeding and bleeding the hydro clutch system, I couldn't get it I'm 3 or 4th gear while the engine was running, but could easily shift through the gears when it was off. Also when I pressed the brakes you could hear the clutch disc grinding up against the flywheel or pressure plate. Also, it would start to roll as soon as you put it in gear, even if the clutch was engaged. This told me that the hydro system was not putting enough pressure on the pressure plate to disengage the clutch or didn't have enough throw right at about 1" of travel of the clutch fork.

Next, I bled some more after reading about so many people's bleeding problems with sm465 hydro systems. This didn't help so I decided to do something I a couple people on the web do and I removed the stock rod in the slave cylinder and added a bolt that was about an 1" longer. This now let the clutch engage properly( ie I can hit all gears now while running/ moving and depressing the clutch pedal while shifting the trans only let's the truck barely move the clutch pedal is depressed. So I swapped it for a Bolt that was another half an inch longer, and now the truck will start to move until I relese the clutch pedal( essentially it works like a clutch should).

So today I take it for a spin to test it out before a wheeling trip tomorrow and i have a couple problems.
1. When shifting into all gears I randomly hear the clutch disc grinding on something, but probably more prevalent in 3 and 4th.

2. When I shift from 2-3 the truck Rpms climb and I actually slow down not speed up no matter how much throttle I apply, and the clutch disc grinding noise happens as im shifting, and even some as I first get into the throttle with the clutch pedal released. When shifting from 3-4 th the sane thing happens, but once again am going slower and the truck will barely move forward as if im in double low.

Any thoughts? I'm trying to get this thing out for a shakedown run tomorrow afternoon so any help would be greatly appreciated since this thing has been in my garage for the last year.
Sounds like your clutch is too big for the bell housing and it is hitting the inside of the bell housing. The standard size for the SM465 is 11 inch clutch. A 12 will hit the inside of the bell housing and requires a little grinding for clearance. I learned this when I did my NV4500 swap from Advance Adapters. Your fortunate in that you can turn the engine. Mine had to be really grooved in order to clear.

No I went with a new rod that was half way inbetween the one where it wasn't engaging enough and the other was engaging it to much. She now rides and shifts through all gears fine!!!
