sm-465 rebuild?

anyone have any experiance rebuilding these in the dfw area? it probably just needs new syncs and a freshen up. it pops outta 3rd and sometimes 2nd. i got a quote from fw gear and axle and 750.00 just seems rediculous for a basic manual transmission but i may be wrong. thanks in advance

Automatic transmissions are gay.

It might cost $750 if they pull it and install it, but no way to just rebuild it. That is rediculious.

You should give it a shot yourself, theres not a lot to screw up. The 3rd gear jump is a common problem, and there is a fix for it but I can't recall all the details, but check this out.

You can pick up a good complete rebuild kit for less than $175.

Novak sells complete kits for <$200. IIRC it includes detailed instructions on how to do it. All new synchros, gaskets, etc.

When I was looking at my tranny situation, one of the options I first considered was rebuilding the SM465. There are some inherent issues with the transmission that need to be addressed to make an already stout unit absolutely bullet proof. Here is the information I collected. I hope this will help you if you are deciding to do this yourself. Personally, I would find a shop to do it. After my research, I was going to go with Anaheim Gear in California. They totally do a complete tear down and fix the three issues that cause the SM465 trouble. The upgraded parts, coupled with the hot tanking, etc, well justified the $900.00 price.

Bill Vista fixing the SM465 sloppy shifter

This should help get you started. I believe I have the US Army Field Maintenance Manual on the complete tear down and rebuild of the SM465 on the other computer. If so, I'll post it up.

I'm here to help, so feel free...If I know the answer I'll tell you. If I don't, I'll tell you that also, and I'll find out for you.

Thanks!

Manny

Do you have a cast iron top or an aluminum top? Is the output shaft 10 spline or 32 spline? Are there two PTO covers or is the PTO unit attached on one of the sides?
