SM465 trouble

I recently aquired an SM465 ('88 with aluminum cover), and after opening it up, I realized I need the 1-2 shift fork, and the reverse fork. I called around and those parts new are about $100 each! That is a show stopper for my budget.

What I am looking for is either the parts used (cheaper price), a different tranny, or should I just give up on having a granny gear for a while? Any advise will be well recieved!

(the parts are different from the cast iron cover model, from what I am told)

Thanks for any help guys

I had a buddy that had the same problem with one out of a 89 Dually. I "think" you can change the whole top cover to the early style forks. Not for sure, but I think I remember hearing that somewhere.

I talked to a guy from Man-Trans off eBay and he told me that the top covers are swapable, but not parts between covers. They do have the forks I need a little more reasonable. $55 and $88. And their rebuild kit is $125 including syncro rings, too. I think I will be doing business with them.

I have a message in to the guy I got the tranny from to call me. He had another 465 when I got this one from him. I am hoping he will make it right and let me trade out or swap top covers or something. Fingers are crossed he still has it!

If you arent in a hurry, I have a 465 out of an 89. It should have the same top as yours and I will sell you either just the top, or the whole tranny (sans bellhousing) for $50.

Well, I talked to the guy tonight and he is going to have someone bring the other tranny to post in Feb. It is a cast top ('81 i think) but it should solve the problem. I will let you know Afro and Justin and thank you so much for the offers from both of you. I may take you up on them yet.

And it still has the NP208 attached to it! I won't have a need for it unless I go full size sometime, but it will be here if I do, or if anyone else needs it.

Another issue I have is I need to know the length of the input bearing retainer on a T4/T5 tranny. I have to use the clutch fork and throw-out bearing from the bellhousing I have to use (T4), and it is a little longer and larger diameter than the SM465 retainer. I just can't find a measurement for it. Thanks guys.
