Smile Swap out manual transmission to automatic

I have a 1980 K10 4x4 Chevy half ton, I think with a np205 transfer case.with a 4 speed manual transmission, looking to put in a th350, 700r4 or 400 automatic. How would I accomplish this task will I need any mounting brackets that fit in the standards mounting holes or drilling required, different driveshafts, adapters, will an aftermarket shifter work in existing floorboard holes or need another steering column, which transmission is best? will use vehicle for light offroading and an everyday driver. How do i get this done without extensive modifications.

Your 205 will not go behind anything other than a 4 speed. Look for a tranny/ t-case combo. it woulb be best to pull it from the vehicle yourself so you know where everything goes. You will need the crossmember if you can get it as well as the driveshafts. Its much easier to take everything needed from one doner if you can. Your driveshafts will be different lengths and maybe different yokes. As far as best choice.... for a DD I would go with a 700r4 and 208. best gearing and you have overdrive. If you want cheap go with a th350 with whatever you can find to go behind it...205 being the strongest. If you are going to be making serious power or turning large tires try to find a th400 and 205. Just my 2 cents.

I know for a fact that the th350/205 combo is the same length as the 465/205. When I went from the 350 to 465 in the K10 the driveshaft lengths didnt change, crossmember bolted in the same place, and the t-case shifter is in the same place.

The 465 205 will bolt up to a th350, but you will need an adapter and different input shaft. The 465 is 10 spline and the 350 is 27.

Then it's not factory.

You can do all sorts of stuff with expensive aftermaket parts.

Is the 465 a 4 speed manual tranny? Im putting in a 350 engine/ 330hp. manual clutch a problem for wife, will using adapter and different input shaft offset with parts would normally go without extensive mods.

SM465 has granny 1st. Yes, 4 speed.

If you gear it down at the axles, in low range and 1st gear on a 465, you should be able to get out and walk on crutches with two broken legs faster than the vehicle is moving at idle. You could pull all your plug wires and climb a hill using your starter motor (with a good battery).

Working a clutch wouldn't be THAT big of a deal (compared to auto trans).

chevy made several versions of the np205 transfer case they made the male output shaft in 10 spline and 32 spline the 32 being stronger the 32 spline output shaft only fits the late modle np205 witch has no collar between them and is also used for the np203 to np205 doubler application. you can add a th350 or th400 with a np205 or a 700r4 to a np205 you just have to find the right parts. advanced adapters has alot of information on these trannies and transfer cases.

700r4 and a 208 or 241, it's a bolt in.
