TBI 350 wont turn off??

Ok guys, Im a little dumbfounded here. I have an 89 GMC Jimmy TBI 350 like the title says it wont turn off. BACKGROUND: I bought this truck a year ago and drove it for a bout 3 months ran great until i shattered the spider gears in the rear 12bolt as well as the RH axle shaft in the front. So its been parked since last May with the battery unhooked.. Well today i went out and started messing around with it was curious if it would start hooked up the battery it cranked and fired right up and purred like a kitten. I let it run for a little while and when i turned the key off it kept running, so i un hooked the battery and found out ive got a good alternater because it kept running stil. it wasnt until i turned on all the lights, radio and put the defrost on high, to pull enough power that it would kill the fuel pump that it died. Does any one have any ideas what my problem is?? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Because it is an 89 it has a TBI on it. That means it has a computer. Most when you turn the key off it cuts power to the computer and the stops grounding the injectors, no fuel the engine dies.
For some reason you have a short in the system that powers the computer.

What you are looking for is a pink wire. The pink wire should be attached to an Ignition 1 (battery power only with key on or in the crank position) power source. Ensure that this is an ignition 1 source. An ignition 1 source is 12volts available any time that the key is NOT in the off position. Also this PINK wire must have 12V while the vehicle is in the cranking mode (starting). This means the wire will have power when the key is on, or start, or back to on. Usually this wire can be taken from the power side of the coil (+) or the power from the old distributor or the fuse box. The system will not work if power is not provided to the (PINK) ignition wire while cranking.

So what your saying, Is that this pink wire may be shorted out with a wire that is constant power, so when I turn off the key, because its crossed with the constant power, it allows the computer to keep running every thing?

Toggle switch and push button. If I did that I'm afraid I might crash it, since every thang I've ever had that set up on has been a derby car. lol.

I'm pretty sure it would die if I did that I will have to try that next weekend. I dont know much of any thing about electrical stuff so please forgive me for this question. But how would the alternater keep it running with the key in the off position?

First let me say this I'm not the all knowing about wiring systems and I could be way off base here. But this can happen and its easy to check.

Think of it this way the exciter wire going to the alternator turns on a switch inside the alternate and lets voltage out the charge side back to the battier and electrical system of the vehicle. If the (switch) diode goes bad it can for lack of a better term get stuck in the closed or on position. So if the engine is turning it's producing voltage. This voltage feeds the hole system and the engine will continue to run.

Well I disconnected the alternater and same thing it wouldnt die. So I started chasing wires and found a pink and red wire melted together under the dash. Wiggled them and the truck died. So now it looks like I get to chase wires not cool.

Cool, I got one right! Sorry about that, the alternater would have been easier to fix.

Ah its aight, yes alternater would have been easyer. Looks like I have to replace about 18 inches of each wire so not as bad as it could be,

That I do not know. I am thinking that they were melted when I got the truck, because when I got it I had to fix a couple wires under the hood that were cut and just twisted together, and looking at them today I noticed that the pink wire that is melted under the dash is one of the ones I fixed under the hood. So I think it did it one the PO, and rather than fix the problem they rigged it so they could just pop the hood and untwist a wire to get it to die. But I dont know why it started giving me issues since the battery has been unhooked for the last oh 6 or 8 months.

Oh and that is just one of the suprises that this truck has had for me, when I pulled the chrome bumpers off to put on winch bumpers, the frame horns were destroyed by a hot wrench in removing PO's winch bumpers Im guessing, at some point someone had blown up the rear axle and replaced with a 12bolt, and said 12bolt had 308 gears, while the front had 410's and some sort of locker. Like I said full of suprises.
