Cool TH350 not shifting to third

Getting my blazer running again after it sat for about 12 years.

Everything is working pretty good with the exception of the transmission.

Basics of what I got. 383, TH350, NP205. TH350 has a B&M shift kit installed in it a long time ago, by myself.

When I parked it long ago it was shifting fine. Shifts hard between first and second... harder than I remember it shifting even after putting the B&M kit in, but maybe I just don't remember right. Checked fluid before ever trying to move it after getting the motor running again, it was low, has a leak somewhere. Think I topped it off with Chrysler tranny fluid, it was all I had setting around. (maybe that's the entire issue? doubt it.) Shifter is going into drive not second, one click above where I'm running it is neutral, so confident my shifter isn't causing it by going straight to second. Checked vacuum line running down to shift solenoid, it's hooked up (have had it come loose years ago when I used this as a daily driver and as I remember that kept it from going into second... seems like it made the first to second shift either slip or very hard, can't really remember).

Basically that's it, any ideas what my next check ought to be? what to look for?

Take it to Scotties transmission on the canyon e-way between Washington and Georgia.

after sitting for twelve years you should concider yourself lucky if it only cost you a tranny for neglecting it...

If it's been sitting that long the valve body is probably gummed up and the valves are sticking.

I'd have to trailer it there, tags, and inspection both out and wouldn't pass now. Was hoping this is something I could take care of that wouldn't require a rebuild or something. Thinking maybe the modulator or whatever the vacuum line runs to is plugged up or stuck from setting so long. I can probably pick up one cheaper from someone than having this one rebuilt. Was hoping to have it ready for the river by next weekend but looks like that may not happen

If it's shifting on it's own at all, it's not the modulator. If the modulator wasn't working it wouldn't shift unless you do it manually.

My suggestion would be to get the transmission warmed up good and pull the pan. Drop the valve body, take it apart and clean it real good. Use some solvent and air to dry the parts, don't use a rag or paper towel, the lint can cause the valves to hang up. It's a simple job, just keep everything clean, lay the parts out so you will know where they go, and keep it clean. Oh, and keep it clean.

Once you get it back together drive it and change the fluid/filter a couple times to help flush it out.

While you are at it, I would also pull the governor and clean it up. It's located on the side of the transmission under the round cover.

will you even need third to run the river? maybe try just running it and manully shift it through the gears a bit, maybe it will unstick itself.

I am with Mark, run it for a while, then change the fluid (and filter) and see if it helps any.

I was thinking it might cause the tranny to overheat running in second all the time. If it had a cooler it might stay cool enough not sure. Probably need to put a cooler on it regardless sooner or later.

you can run a bottle of B-12 through it.. but you will have to change the fluid and filter once it starts cutting the varnish.. Do not leave it in there...

well pulled governor, looks fine to me, moves freely, no binding or anything, gear in good shape. put it back together, pulled valve body as much as I didn't feel like it. dont see anything there sticky or corrosion wise. all valves move freely. has b&m shift kit in it with one ball above plate, went to b&m sight read original install instructions (been a lot of years since I put it in) one check ball is correct for street/strip setup, would have had two for heavy duty set up... off to town to find valve body gaskets and get it all put back together. going to get some more vacuum hose and replace all lines down to modulator, other than that, not a lot I can do, not going to tear it out and rebuild it myself and not putting enough money into it to have it rebuilt... will just run it in second if it doesn't shift to third after I'm finished I guess lol.

It's probably to late but make sure you check real close the B&M gasket is more than likely not the same as a stock one.

hhhmmm no not to late, having to wait till monday to buy a gasket... hadn't thought that it might be different, may have to buy a whole dang shift kit to get the gasket I need, that blows. Maybe a tranny shop will have a B&M gasket? I doubt it but it's something I'll ask about when I go get it. Probably try Turbo Exchange first, their close by my work.

edit: maybe not SO bad, went back to B&M sight shift kit is $34.11 ... could be worse I guess. hope it's about same price locally, should be.

checked with Buddy at Turbo Exchange, he said stock gasket, gave me a couple, I ran home through 'em in, all good now. not sure if it was the dried out vacuum hose that didn't seem to be leaking, but replaced it anyway. playing with the governor, it didn't seem sticky or gummed up stuck it back in, cleaned the valve body up, it wasnt ugly, just a bit of band worn band material coating it, cleaned it all off, worked the valves they all seemed pretty free, stuck it all back together and it shifts to third now.

Happy now, not sure what the problem was but it's fixed anyway.

no problem man! Were going down this Friday for the weekend. I'm just gonna run it on the old weathered 33's on it for the time being I guess. I'll have to be sure I try to avoid any really bad rocks but it'll probably be ok. If I blow a tire, it's not gonna be the end of the world for this truck LOL
