Timing Help

Yesterday when I put the motor in I killed the Distributeur.

You can see it in the above image. I went out and bought a new one to replace it, but I was unsure of how to put it back in. Because the engine has been setting out side for a while I went ahead and pulled all the spark plugs and turned it over a few times to remove any water that might have got in there and make sure it wasn't frozen.
I had my wife hold her very small thumb over the number 1 cylinder, but she couldn't tell if she could compression or not.

Question: Are these the timing scale marks? I can see numbers on it and I have that mark on the zero mark. The Numbers in the pic starting at the top and going down are 12,8,4,and 0
So all I need to do now is put the distributeur back in and line the cap up with the number one wire?
I had the cap off when I installed the motor so, all the wires should be in the right spots.
I just want to get this thing running. I can always take it to someone to adjust the timing later if I can get it close. I just want to know if this will get it close.

Damn dude, atleast get a concrete slab poured. I would go nuts having to work in the dirt and the jack sinking in the ground all the time.

It is the thorns and briars that kill me while crawling around on the ground. They go right through those blue tarps.
I spent the money for the concrete slab on the tractor. I can't do anything untill I get rid of the $1,200 I pay in child support every month. I still have another year and half left in that chit.

I am 35 and I have only been with Tab 3.5 years (this time).
OK, Mitch called me and explaned it all to me. He said I need to find that compression stroke, because it will go by that "0" twice. Then he told me I need to line the oil pump with a long screwdriver. Now that was a good piece of info! He also said with my TBI computer should time itself if I can get it that close after I run it. Plus the other stuff I put up higher.

When you figure out that #1 cylinder is at TDC, stab the distributor and make sure it seats all the way down. Line up the rotor with the plug wire that goes to #1 cylinder (by turning the distributor). That should be close enough to start it. When you set the "initial" timing, you have to make sure the engine is warmed up and unplug a connector near the distributor (single wire). Set the timing to ZERO using the sensor on #1 plug wire. If you have done any engine mods, you can tweak the initial timing (advanced or retarded) a couple degrees to account for mods. Like if you are going to run premium fuel (ha ha) you can advance the initial by 2 degrees for better performance. Just remember, if it pings you need to go back.

I'll play with it somemore tomorrow. I guess I should pick up a oil pump priming tool and prime the oil pump before I put the distributeur in. I probably should have done that before turning the motor over getting the water out of it.

Thing I still need to prime it?

You must be sure you are at TDC on the COMPRESSION STROKE.

Use some chalk or white-out to mark the timing mark on the harmonic balancer so you can easily see it as the starter turns the motor. Buy a remote starter if you must so that you don't have to sit inside and turn the key. That way you can stand there with your thumb over number 1 and keep cranking til you're sure you feel the compression stroke.

LOL right now I'm use the battery off the jeep and some jumper cables to "hot wire" the starter. My wife is afraid to hold the screwdriver with the jump cable on and touch the two post on the strarter.
I wish I had enough wired up to use the key.
