Torque converter selection

Would you want a low /stock stall converter for rock crawling? Figure if im going to rebuild the tranny with good parts im not gonna install a used 25 year old converter. Its a stock rebuilt 318, performance built 727, going into a 205 then into 4:10 60s on 38s .crew cab 77 dodge.

Stock converter would work well for your application. No need to get silly. High stall will make you hate your rig.
You want torque multiplication happening at idle rather than at 2500 rpm.

Maybe even lower...from what I read, for rockcrawling keep it as low/ close to stock as possible.

Thistle sounds awefuly low. I figures a stock stall to be near 15-18
Just curious cause if I order the 2k converter now I could possibly get it this weekend.

A lot depends on gearing also, sometime you need to raise the stall to keep the rig from pulling through the brakes at idle. 1800 or so is usually sufficient. Glad you made this thread though as I will be in market for a converter soon myself.

Me time? What's that? You will love the stock stall speed. Big4x4 makes a point but remember that even with a doubler, when you wanna haul ace in 2wd your gonna hate a high stall speed.

I'm pumped guys. Almost done with my tube work and throwing rock rings on this weekend :-)

Not to sure that you would hate the rig, I will say this, the rig that took 2nd place in king of trees ( and was previous winner), runs a slightly higher stall that stock in his buggy. It flat out works.

Different gearing, different engine, different purpose...it all depends I guess.

the higher stall will give you more torque multiplication and a "lower" crawl ratio

C'mon man. Let's read his first post. Stock 318, 205, 4.10s on 38s. Same as what some of us drove in highschool. You don't get a lower crawl ratio by running a high stall. You create a crap load of extra heat in a rig that spends all day tryin to idle around with no airflow.

Not to mention that converters are built to match cam and engine specs. So as soon as he jumps to a higher stall all of his low end torque is gone because the engine made it just off idle.

Ask the trees winner what motor he runs AND/OR if he runs a doubler. We aren't building that rig in this post.

I tried to stay quiet. I just couldn't hold my tongue.

Former trees winner runs no doubler, 3:1 in his np205, a 700r4 and a tpi 350 with a very mild cam.. It would work fine on stock converter other than pulling though brakes, singe runs just slightly higher than stock stall rate.

Also remember this, stock stall is a generic term.. Stock may be 1600 in one tranny, 1800 in another, and 1400 in a different one. Not familiar with tf stuff a whole lot, but th400s are a lil higher stall than th350 for example. Even that is generic , as I bet if you read into it more each different vehicle model may be specific do to many varying factors.. When I say slightly higher that stock, im not saying some $400 3000 rom converter, it's more along the lines of 1800 vs 1600....

Well I didnt say he would have a lower crawl ratio I said he would have a "lower" crawl ratio..... A higher stall will let the motor operate at a higher rpm and sense most 318 made there torque around 2300 rpm Im pretty sure it will just improve the performance
