Torque converters...

Never been in the position where I needed a specialty converter, so this is all new to me. I am trying to decide what converter to get for optimum performance in my rig. Motor is a basically stock vortec 4.8 with a cam 196/201 duration, .467/.479 lift.. Transmission is a full manual th350 engine braking in 1st and 2nd, 5.38s in the axles, and lets plan on 10:1 capability in the case all on 42" tires. I don't wan ok much stall causing tons of heat, but don't want to little where it try's to pull through the brakes in full low. Transmission is built fully with TCI components, so I guess I would want to match up with a tci converter.. Anyone have any good insight here?

I wouldn't go much looser than a stock converter. IMO, I would stay at 1800-2000.

x2, you want the low RPM torque. I would rather have to upgrade my brakes than have a high stall - For crawling that is..

Gonna ditto the above. I wheel an auto and can say that I would not want much more stall for most things. I dont know for sure, but mine is pretty stock. The only issue I have is off idle power until boost comes up, but you won't have to worry about that. And even with my tiny 6 banger it is fine 95% of the time.

I agree, too high a stall, I feel can be uncontrollable on technical trails. If you are in a big block buggy, then yah maybe 2400 stall! Stock is plenty, just have good brakes!

One thing I forgot to mention was the downhilling control. With low stall and manual valve body to hold low gear you can idle downhill and it is almost the same as a standard; barely have to touch a brake. You go too loose and no manual valve body you will burn the brakes up and it does not feel good either.

Wait a sec.....you mean high stall converters aren't very practical for crawling?

What? I'm confused. I heard that high stall converters lower your crawl ratio??

I believe you are referring to compression braking - a manual valve body doesn't guarantee compression braking - you have to specify it. As far as I know, all/most stock valve bodies already compression brake.

Stock is not a manual valve body, and has engine braking in 1st gear. I have a manual valve body that has engine braking in 1st and 2nd.. Big difference..

I ordered a TCI full manual valve body that specifically states it has engine braking in 1st and 2nd...

Well now I'm stuck on ordering, they offer that converter and another with a -A suffix to it. One is small pattern and one is large, not sure which one will fit my flex plate. Need to order the flex plate and measure it before I order the converter. The 5.3 flex plate isn't dual drilled, otherwise this wouldn't matter.
