Torqueflite transmission

Ok, my jeep has a 304/tf999/4:1 dana 300, 5.38's and 42's.. Here is my issue: In high range I have to get rpms up to 1500 or so before I do anything, and reverse is almost useless. HIgh range I basically have no power, when I go to low, its 10x better obviously but still I have to get 1200 or so rpm to do anything. you would think with all the gearing, I would probably pull through the brakes, or at least crawl as soon as i let off brake. Now, does this sound like the issue of bands needing adjustment, or does it sound worse??

first three on trouble shooting chart, give me a call...
1. check fluid level
2. check shift linkage, is it going in to proper gear?
3. check filter

fluid level is 1 qt high, filter is new and linkage is set. acts this way in 1 or in D. ALso, i do have the throttle valve held full open at all times (the rig sees 99% of its time in 1st gear), i have played around moving that around and it has not changed anything

The first/reverse servo is a common issue on these transmissions. The seal will go bad or worse, the snap ring will let loose and the servo falls out of the pocket. If you have no reverse and little to no first, I bet the servo is the culprit.

Drop the pan and it's on the driver side rear of the case, behind the valve body. To pull the servo, you have to drop the filter. You might be able to get away with adjusting the band if the servo is still in the case. There is a nut and set screw to the side of it for adjustment.

Still need to look into this, but I did decided that this tranny will be coming out after labor day. I have a fresh 0 mile th350 i am gonna swap in its place. Fresh trans, no tv cable, should work good!!!

The trans in my wife's rig is doing the same thing. Hers was the 1st/rev servo. I have all the parts to fix it, just no desire and been busy working/wheeling mine. I'm hoping once the shop gets put up next week, I will get motivation back since I'll have a covered spot in the a/c to work on it.

I would much rather toss the trans and swap to a 350/205. Do I just need to find an adapter for the GM belhousing to fit the block?

AA sells a kit for $450 that adapts to te th350. It's a spacer plate new flex plate, flex plate adapter and all hardware. Uses the regular amc starter and a regular Chevy converter. I just do not like throttle valves, main reason I dislike the tf trannys. Not to mention I already have a th350 and the spud shaft to install my Dana 300 behind it.

I hate TV cables with a passion. That's one reason I wont run another 700r4, other than they are weak. I have the parts to fix this one and will just go with it. Other than the servo, this is a good, fairly fresh trans with all the goodies. Good luck on yours.

Let's revive this again. I am gonna look into the transmission a little before summer run, something that I was thinking about is: I installed a deeper pan on the transmission, maybe 1" deeper, however I am using stock filter and gasket, no spacer at all. I had asked the tranny shop about a spacer, they said it was not needed since my level will still be at same height on the filter. Think that could be some of the issue possibly?

Secondly, this servo issue, how simple is that to change in the vehicle and where can you locate a new one online?

The deeper pan and no spacer, could cause an issue. I ordered the parts I needed from PAC Transmissions. I'll get you the link in the morning when I log in on my laptop. If you upgrade the servo, whic I wouldn't do in your situation. I would simply replace the steel cover and snap ring. If indeed that's the problem. You may be able to get by with tightening the band, but won't know till you drop the pan. Changing the steel cover and snap ring is a quick job.

Deep pan on my tf helped, use a spacer! Steep angles affect it...

The best part is, you can use the new style metal filter instead of the old fiber because it won't hit the bottom of the pan.
