Tranny help!!

Ok guys, Ive been having some issues with my transmission. The main one is when I step on the gas at any speed over 45 the tranny seems to upshift. The rpms actually go down. If I let off it goes back to normal. Sometimes I can drop a gear but most of the time no. Im sure im in overdrive when I do this. Just don't get it. Secondly, Sometimes she wont shift into overdrive if Im on the throttle kinda hard. Im starting to wonder if the tranny is about to quit but she shifts good and solid. This is on a 1988 GMC v1500 4x4 Suburban. I am thinking about a shift kit but I don't know if this tranny has ever been serviced. In the 5 years Ive had it Ive only put 30,000 miles on her. I have had both problems since day one but now she gets a lot more highway miles since I work so much farther from home. I don't need to stuck in between SA and Pleasanton. Should I get another tranny to have just in case or will servicing the valve body help? Any advice would be great!!

Sounds like the lockup on the torque converter isn't unlocking when you throttle up, any idea if its an after market trans? Or stock?

The only stock 700r that will stay in 4th above 1/2 throttle is one that has a corvette servo, so, vette, police...ect

little info needed also...Lift? Gears? Bigger tires? Stock cam? Efi?

More info, ok. Shes stock all the way around. Not sure of the gearing but I haven't modified it. And no lift. Sittin on wrangler duratracs with tbi. I don't know if the tranny is original or not. I assume so. My biggest worry is doing a shift kit and cleaning up the valve body and the thing taking a crap on me. I don't know how to tell if the torque converter is locking up or not. Ive been through several th400s but never a 700r4.

the lockup is worked by the brake switch.
while in OD cruising with the throttle depressed tap the brakes, if the rpms go up then the convertor just unlocked. thats the easiest and only way i know of to test function of the lockup. are you sure your TV cable is set correctly. look at bowtieoverdrives.com and read the instructions and what the tv cable does.

Obijuan, I just went and tried that. No change. I have not checked the cable but I will. So I thought about the cruise control. Engaged and disengaged normally. Keep the ideas coming. Could the brake switch be the problem?

Only if your brake lights dont work anymore. I installed a bowtieoverdrives tc lockup kit. Fixed mine amd was really easy to do. I just dont know if this is your issue. Mine just plain didnt lock up.
