tranny ID help

My friend just bought a 77 blazer and it has (or is supposed to have) a 95 Z71 engine and tranny. The engine looks good but on paper the tranny is said to be a 4l60E but the transmission shifts 4 times meaning that the transmission has 5 forward gears (and as you know the 4l60e is a 4 speed.) The tranny is an electronic model but beyond that i don’t know much else. Anybody have an idea on a model number? Heavy/medium/light duty tranny? ill see if i can get some pictures and a count of the pan bolts.

Are you going by feel or by a tach on the shifts? If the last shift only drops the engine speed by about 200 RPM then it's probably a lock-up torque converter.

The only 5spd that chevy has out right now is the Alison, and they are big monsters.

I'm with Dott: the extra gear is the converter locking up.

one more for TC lockup. i had a 99 with the 4L80E and it would do the same thing. felt like it was shifting but it was really just locking up the TC and taking the slip out the picture.

test it out... after it "shifts" into that "5th" gear... press on the brake pedal with your left foot while holding the accelerator steady... it'll shift back out as the converter unlocks.

the 60 is suppose to equal a th350, while the 80 equal the th400. but with overdrive so that should help you decide.

I have that tranny in my 98 Z-71. It's been rebuilt 3 times in the last year. POS tranny, IMO.

the 4l60e is the electronic version of the 4l60 (previously known as the 700r4). keep it cool, keep the pressures up, and keep it cool!, and it will be fine. with the non-elec. versions you can tighten up the TV cable a tad to raise pressures (though it also affects shift points). ideally you want it to be built to run at higher pressures. with E version, there is probably a chip or some other electronic add-on that will raise pressures for you... I used to have a 96 chevy truck that for 40 bucks i picked up an electronic module that tapped into the harness to firm up the shifts. something for you to research

ps. the gearing in the 700 (lower first than the th350 or th400, and an OD) make it a better all around tranny in my opinion. but it is not install and forget (read: bullet proof) like the TH400, but its a hell of a lot cheaper than a 4l80e (the heavy duty tranny with OD)
