Tranny Question

What year did chevrolet start integrating the transmission into the wiring harness? I have a chance to get a 93 TBI out of a chevy caprice with 36k and was wondering if the tranny was computer controlled.

93 probably would be comp controlled. Somewhere around 91-94 the 4l60e's were put in vs. the 4l60 and 700r4. All of your TBI OD auto trannys will have some degree of computer control and sensing. ALL TBI set-ups use a VSS (manual and auto). All of you OD trannys will have the computer control lock-up of the converter. IIRC even the TH400s in TBI rigs had a lock-up converter. If you are wanting to ditch the computer control stuff off of everything but the engine, just post up what you are wanting to do with this harness. Good luck!

If i get it this motor will be going into my blazer with an sm465. I was hoping the harness was just for the motor. So will i just have to cut out that part of the harness or do have have to chance some stuff with the computer?

I would use the motor and get a harness from the jy from an 87-90 ish tbi that uses a 1227747 ecm as it is the easiest one to use. The harness from the car can be used but it will take alot of work to thin out what you need and don't need. It is possible to do if you take your time.

Check out binderplanet.com for the wiring diagrams. There are a few that do a complete breakdown from the pinouts on the computers and will tell you exactly what wires you need for the motor to run. That is how I did the FI swap into my cj7.

Well i am getting the whole vehicle so i can get everything that i want. I know that there is a 87ish tbi suburban in the junkyard up the road and i think it may still have an intacked wiring harness.

How hard was it to thin out or harness Will?

It took me about 4 hrs on the living room floor from start to finish. Mostly cleaning up the wires of all the oil and crud and using masking tape to label every wire by its pinout number.

A chilton manual can also be used if you know which sensors you are keeping.

You will need an inline fuel pump or you can use a stock in tank pump. Also you will need a vss (vehicle speed sensor) so the ecm knows when you are moving or else it can cause the vehicle to die when coasting to a stop. Your computer will need a chip from a manual trans vehicle as well. If you eliminate some of the sensors such as knock sensor, egr etc you will need a new chip burned to match.

I'll see if I can find the wiring diagram that I used Kyle.

cut out all the tranny harness stuff. if you arent using emissions either, you can cut out all that stuff. all you should be then left with is injectors, coolant temp. sensor, tps, map, iac, knock, o2, oil sender/switch, a tan fuel pump wire, a pnk/blk ignition hot wire, orng. batt. hot wire, and ground. you will then want to dig in the harness and find an orange wire w/a black stripe. hook that wire to ground to keep the computer "thinking" its in park so it wont look for tranny signals or emissions signals. i think thats all you need IIRC, this is how i run my 4.3 in my flatty....works flawless.
