Tt v6

Been looking at the new EcoBoost Ford V6 in the F-150s and the MPG that they get. Got me thinking could you build a twin turbo 4.3 V6 and still get the power of a V8 but better MPG in a full size? I know there's a lot more to the ford motor then just twin turbos but still it may work somewhat, thoughts?

You can but that engine is just not stout enough for anything you are going to use the power on. You would be better off starting with a 3.8 Buick since it is designed for boost. I have built two turbo gas projects and they are very cool. However, they are also very fickle and very hard to keep together. Mine were both built as good as you can with factory blocks and they would not stay together long.

I think it's a fun at home project and not the cheapest. I know that each motor is designed specifically for turbos in mind, even different for twins so runnin twins on a motor not designed for them creates hurdles, which is why it's a fun at home project. I'm sure you could tune to get close but the driveability wouldn't be the same. Quirky and abrasive at times......hey like me. Lol

Great idea. I'll subscribe to your build thread

I would think keeping the boost down below 10psi and a good intercooler would give it the power of a stock V8 and keep it together.

^^^^ but who wants to pull up next to a piston cracking wrx runnin 25psi on a single turbo and say sorry man I'm only runnin 10psi in this beast? I'd have to run 30psi on twins and show him why he should have stayed home playin his PS3. Lol

Oh they make in cab boost controllers just for that occasion. Lol But the hole point in the build is to have a fullsize with the mpg of a small truck.

You are not going to get much if any better mileage than you would with a high efficiency V8. If you wanted to do it then do it for the cool factor.

I built one turbo V8 and ran it at 12 PSI. It was a 409 inch chevy with 230cc dart heads and EFI. It was stupid fast....like breaking tires loose at 50mph fast. It would have made over 1000HP at 40 psi right before it pushed the crank into the pavement. Old school chevy blocks just wont handle much power and the 4.3 is the same. Mine was pushing the heads up because the factory block deck was too thin. I got so burned out and tired of pulling the engine apart that I traded it off.

I built another turbo gasser pulling tractor that was a 300 inch 4 banger. I ran it at 25psi through a carb. It was just cool as heck, but I kept lifting the head on it as well. I finally got some custom 1/2" ARP studs for it (5 per cylinder) and that seemed to seal it. However, the first pass after that I sheared the flywheel bolts off and sold it the following year.

Point is that the turbo engine is real sexy, but it comes with alot of money and alot of heartache. It also takes alot of time to learn how to size and to make everything work properly.

The GMC Typhoon is a high-performance version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. Produced in 1992 and 1993, the Typhoon was based on the 1991 GMC Jimmy SUV.

Both the GMC Syclone and Typhoon trucks featured a Mitsubishi TD06-17C/8 cm2 turbocharger and Garrett Water/Air intercooler attached to a 4.3 L LB4 V6 intake manifolds, fuel system, exhaust manifolds, and a 48mm twin-bore throttle body from the 5.7 L GM Small-Block engine. All Syclones and Typhoons had a 4L60 4-speed automatic transmission and a BorgWarner 1372 (Syclone)/4472 (Typhoon) transfer case splitting torque with 35% forward and 65% to the rear wheels. Both trucks featured all-wheel drive, upgraded brakes, and sport modifications to the standard suspensions. Unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon featured an air-operated self-leveling rear suspension. Output was officially 280 hp (209 kW) and 360 lbft (488 Nm), but some stock Typhoons have been measured at over 300 hp (224 kW) on a dynamometer.[citation needed]

The Typhoon was capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds and could do a quarter-mile run in 14.1 seconds at 95 mph (153 km/h). Car and Driver compared the Syclone's performance favorably to the Ferrari 348ts, Chevrolet Corvette, and Nissan 300ZX Turbo.

Both of those are based on mini truck platforms, I'm saying in a fullsize. As far as the motor goes its not going to be some crazy high Hp motor, just saying low boost making around 350hp should hold together. Not looking to make 1,000hp(has been done buy a few people already) just looking for a better mpg daily driver.

What about using an old 292 straight six if pulling power and mpg are the main goals?

Man you can get 300hp out of stock 4.3 with different year parts. swopped onto one motor and the right cam..

My old engine builder said he could get me into the 350 to 475hp range with some heathy $$$ parts in one.

Or just find a old 4.3 nascar motor that they ran can i the late 80's..

Just remeber the 4.3 is a cut down 350...
swop meets are a good place to find parts..

The Ecoboost v6 is just built like a diesel motor but runs on gas..
They ran that motorin a ton of baja races and proofed it out before it was released. So they could say it would hang with V8's.

Actual mpg on the tt ford is something like 16-19 according to a guy who traded one in with only 4000 miles on it

Yup, my brother in law bought an ecoboost when they first came out. It is very impressive performance for the displacement but all around performance is about like that of an LS equipped Chevy. The problem with mileage is that you are limited by the laws of physics and thermodynamics....only gonna be so good for a given fuel no matter what.
