Turbo 350 Tranny Rebuild

I need advice on a rebuild of TH 350 tranny. It will be strictly for a rock buggy and want to build it right the first time. I have read all kinds of forward and reverse shift patterns, manual and auto valve bodies and so on.
I have no idea where to start as I've been a manual guy my entire rock crawling time.
Tranny will be powered by a 4.3 TBI. I'm going to run a 4 to 1 Dana 300 behind it.

Artcar/Winters shifter or something like that where you can just slap it straight into reverse.

You can get the forward/reverse slap shift with both forward or reverse valve bodies.

With standard shift (forward) you just modify the gate in the shifter (or I think you can buy one) that allows you to go straight from a forward gear to reverse in case you are about to flip over backwards. Whether the the stop is with the trigger pulled up or released depends on how you grind the gate. There is a detailed thread for this by Billavista over on PBB if you search.

The only advantage in my mind to going to reverse full manual is that you gain the ability to do things like 2nd gear launches. But it comes at a price.... $$ Valve body + reverse shifter. But the same ratio might be possible by just shifting the t-case to high and using 1st gear. And I'm not sure that you can straight shift from 2nd to reverse with an Art car shifter in stock form. But someone who actually owns one would know better than I.

I ran a B&M prostick with modified gate and stock th400 valve body. In that form, I could go from any forward gear straight to reverse by holding the trigger and slamming it all the way forward.
And I could go straight to neutral from any forward gear by leaving the trigger down and slamming forward. You have engine breaking for down hill just by putting the shifter in 1st gear with a stock th400. (Not sure if the th350 is the same or not)

However, most people with RFM valve bodies sware by them, so I may get corrected in short order.

I think it's like a lot of things..... Once you learn the parameters of your setup, you can make it do what you want.

I'm running a 700r4 in the CJ with the reverse manual valve body, with the winters shifter and I love it. Putting a turbo 350 in Guardrails Toyota and will do the same thing. 4.3, T-350 and dana 300.

Like Hucklebuggy said the 2nd gear launches are handy, as well as the ability to hit reverse when it goes too far past vertical.

I have a fm rvb in my 700 and love it. I'd not build anything different if starting from scratch. You can shift 2nd to reverse or first to reverse instantly....it's a good thing but you gotta be careful. I also have compression braking in 1st and 2nd gear which is nice. When you are crawling and you go 1r1r1r1r....it is just to have the reverse pattern IMHO.
