Vortec 454

Driving back from Houston, it just shutoff.. no sputter, no miss, just like you turned the key off.

I've been trying to diagnose the issue with no luck.. Has new fuel pump, and proper pressure. It spins and acts like it wants to fire up, but doesn't. almost smells like it is flooded, but when I pulled a couple of plugs they were dry. Has no blown fuses. I'm thinking maybe crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft sensor or ECM. But I do not want to just go buy parts with a try and see..

any ideas?

x2 spark, fuel pressure and definitely codes! those distributors are common to go bad as posted above! i love my vortec 454, very strong engine!!

Check to see if it has oil pressure when turning over. They were kinda bad about stripping out the distributor gear. When it goes, they will just shut down with no warning.

mine did that a few times and it turned out to be the crank sensor. alotta times you can fix the problem by just pulling the sensor out and cleaning it up. make sure you clean the connectors, that was 1 of my problems, the other was too much build up on the sensor head

well after piddling with it off and on today, I am not getting any spark that I can tell.. screwdriver in the plugwire test...

I pulled the crank sensor yesterday and cleaned it, made no difference.. after reading about the distributors going bad, I am going to pull it and see if the gear is stripped. does the plenum have to come off to remove the distributor?

anybody got a known good distributor for sale?

it shouldn't. on the vortec 350's it has a retainer just like the old 350's so the 454's should be the same. might have to massage your firewall a little though to get it out cause it's real tight on mine

Did you check your grounds? When you turn the key on you should have 12 volt power going to the computer and the distributor.

Did it have oil pressure when spinning over? The dist. drives the oil pump so if the gear is worn out you won't have oil pressure either. If you got oil pressure then it's prolly just the guts in the dist.

Cant you pop the distributor cap off and see if the rotor is turning instead of pulling it? Or do like Jonas said and check oil psi while cranking?

Be sure to look at the contacts on the cap and rotor. I have seen them worn so bad they wont fire.

how old is your cap and rotor? i bought a new set about 3 years ago and they burned out within a year. confused the hell outta me till my buddy asked if i was checking for spark at the coil and plugs or just the coil. well i was only looking at the coil because of the cap and rotor being new

sorry to hear that snick. i bought my 96 gmc sierra 1500 brand new with 4.6 miles on the odometer and it now has 288xxx. original motor minus the heads(cracked due to me being a dumbass), was on all original accessories till last year when i had to replace the starter and decided to replace the water pump while i was replacing the heads. other then that the only problem i've ever had was the weak trannies they put in the 1/2tons(blew up 4 4l60e's) but i have a very bad habit of thinking it's a 1 ton and loading it like 1

it lives again!!!!

replaced Crank sensor.. Ign control module... did not fix.. .replaced the dist and fired right up...
