W56?????????

I got this transmission from a guy that had the doubler behind it. I swapped the doubler in the buggy. Mitch at sand drags said that the W56 is the cats meow for yota transmissions.
How do I identify that this transmission is a W56?
Any good websites?
MNMToy? I know you have the answers.

Top shift W56A-or B meaning that you can't shift the T-case from the shifter mounted on the Transmission side. Topshift T-case would go behind this one.
This one has a single shifter.


W56c-d-e would have a forward shift T-case behind it. The Tranny has two shifter on it...and nothing on the T-case

I knew you would come through. I think it is a w56c. I think!!! It has the forward shift t-case. I will take some pics. I wish I knew the year model put I don't and nether does the guy I bought it from. He bought it all out of the yota and installed it in his 80 model, then sold it to me when his motor blew up.

your pictures looks like a G 54 series Tranny. not a W56. Sorry.
Roll it to the side and snap a picture.

take note of the shifter base plate. Front shifter is narrow rear one is wide. Both secured by 4 bolts each.
A W56 has 6 bolts on the base plate (forward shift app). holding down the base plate.

So, Pretty sure it's a G54. Which one is better the stock L43 or the G54? The L43 is 3.67:1 and the G54 is 3.93:1. That's as far as my knowledge goes.

I would go with the G54 between your two choices. You pick up 5th gear. And it lowers the RPM's out on the HWY. The tranny will be newer that is for sure. Now granted it's a longer Transmission so you will have to fab something up for the cross member. or go aftermarket to remedy that bump in your swap.
I used my TG dual case skid/cross member plate and mounted it with square U-bolts. I still have to add another set of U-bolts to have 4 of them holding it place.
You will also have to cut new holes on the Tranny Tunnel to clear the shifters.
One other solution that is a direct bolt in would be a L50 or L52 (5 speed) Transmission. They are the same lenght as the L43/45. your plugs for the 4x4 and Reverse should plug right up...as well as the Speedo cable. Cross member will work (single case application) and You dont have to mod the drive shafts. L50/52 (81-83) I might be off on the 1983 but between the 81/82 Find one out of a 82. The L52 has bigger bearings then the L50.
My stock speedo cable still worked with my W56 and so did the 4x4 indicator light. The Reverse plug will have to be spliced and made longer. Which I haven't got around to. Front drive shaft made Longer and rear one shorten.
The W56 is just about 4" longer then your L43.

Here is a phone shot of the trans. I'm pretty sure it's a G54.
Guy said it needed the shifter rebuilt. Explain that?
Also, I won't be driving down the hwy. It's a buggy...here is a pic of Nick driving it.
