blazerkid4x4 just gettin started
what do YAll think?

I just got a 96 jeep cherokee sport 4wd (xj) as a gift from my dads fiance after my blazer fianally bit the bullet. White smoke blowing out the exhaust , the shifter wont come of out 1st (sm465) and the wiring is a complete nitemare.
Newayz they paid 1500 for it and it is in great condition body and interior wise. No dents , dings or scratches in the body, power windows, and locks. THe a/c blew cold, but it overheated after driving only a few blocks. I figured a head gausket need to be replaced. Pulled the valve cover and found sludge, looked like burnt oil with the vavles. At this point I feared the worst and went further pulled the push rods and rockers. The head studs came out next. Pulled the head and found that the number 1 cylinder has alumnium from the pistion melted to the cylinder wall. Im thinking the ring colasped from the heat and caused the melted alumnium. I have another I6 from another 2wd xj but it was overheated serverly as was this one but the cylinders seemed fine as do the pistions.

I have a few options ... Repair the number 1 cylinder
I could use a engine hone and remove the aluminum. COuld either tape the cylinder up or remove the bottom end and let the shavings fall. The later would mean i would have to pull the engine. I could then just replace that pistion and rings or replace all the pistions and rings.
or
I could Buy a new long block from orielly for 900 plus a core. Alot less work and a warranty, so thats a plus...
Another thing i was wondering i what can I do to get some power out of this motor since i already have it apart with out goin crazy and killing all reliablity and gam mileage I used to drive a 350 with 38's so anything better than 6-8 mpg is ok to me would like some where close to 12-14.
I think I found the reason it overheated. THe thermostat dont open in boiling water making me belive it was faulty. An the fan clucth was not working properly. THe coolant wasnt in the greatest condition but still seemed useable.

I have bought the following parts already
New
Cap
Rotor
Wires
Plugs
Water Pump
Fan clutch
colant
Oil filer
Motor oil
Tranny/tcase oil
Diff oil
A full gasket set for the top end
Exausht manifoild gaskets

on a side note this motor had 132,000 miles before it went and was owned by a woman... It also had the famous crack in the exaust manifoild.

Once I get it back on the road I plaing on these mods.

High flow cat to a flowmaster 40 or an exuast styem of some kind
eletric fan on a relay
Posibly a new radiator. depending on the conditon of the curent one
6.5" lift from rough country
Sye from andvanced adapters
tom wood d-shaft double cardin
nitrogen shocks
33x12.50x17 bfg m/ts
17x9.5 hello gunners 4.5 bs can get em for about 10 bucks more than stellies
Rock lights
New head unit
2 12's new speakers and 2 amps
IF you have any opions upon my ideas or therioes or product slect ment feel free to let me know.
This is supposed to be my dd so I might hold back on a few of those mods but i can't dream of goin from 37's to stock I would just feel wierd.

Sry for it being so long I'll make a build up thread as soon as I start working on it.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and trouble, buy the longblock. the I6 is pretty peppy already (a V-8 it's not) you could improve performance and off-roadability by going to lower gears something like 4:10 or even 4:56, thereby killing two birds with one stone.

for sure

That Power Tech I6 is a great engine, great torque and about 195 HP which should get you over any trail with that list of mods you have planned. Go with the long block, that price sounds really good for what you will get. Some type of exhaust header and go with a free flowing air filter. Good luck with the project.

errr um yr dad already bought that stuff not you, kiddo! I already said buy a longblock, and get Zac to tig the header. but if you gotta have something today then, pull the pan hone that hole and buy a new piston and rings for #1, its stock. drive it to work easy!!! and save yr money and buy a longblock.

you should be able to get the motor up high enough to get the pan off. and remember to CLEAN EVERYTHING before and AFTER you hone!

when you gonna remove yr broken heap from my front yard? or do i get to start selling parts off of it???

hmm a set of 37'' boggers (90%) on steel wagon wheels could be worth what 50-100 bucks???d-44, 12 bolt, 4spd with granny? beat up body? broke @ss 350....

you really dont need a trailer to haul it off, since yr dads got ripped last night. me i dont care but my wife on the other hand.....thats another story.

I have a rebuildable 350 crate motor and 208 t-case with 400 adapter. Rip out the Jeep crap and put in Chevy. You'll want to sooner or later anyway Cory. See you guys Saturday
