Question Will it work???

ok, i have a 1991 k-1500 z-71 it has a five speed which i think is a nv3500, but i am doing a straight axle conversion and i am wondering if a np 208 will work so i can go with a pass. side axle (dana 44,60) because they are plentiful and alot easier on the wallet. any help would be great!

Your 5 speed is a NV4500, the NV3500 are smaller and didn't come out until early 2000 in Jeeps. I don't think the NP208 was ever behind the NV4500, might have been though. I would go for an NP205, advance adapter has the adapter you will need I believe.

GM has been using the nv3500 since they started putting 5 spds in the 1/2 tons in the late 80s. It's easy to tell the difference between the 4500 and 3500. The 4500 will have a granny gear while the 3500 wont. The 3500 also has an all aluminum case and the bellhousing is part of the case. The 4500 has a seperate bellhousing and a cast iron case.

Neither ever had a 208 put behind them from the factory. However, I believe the 208 and 241 are interchangeable as long as you have the correct splined input. The problem with using a 208 is that you will no longer have a vss. This is needed for the speedometer and also the FI. I know the FI will work without it, but I dont know if there are any mods to make it work properly. I would look for a pass. drop 241 from a 89(?)-91 suburban or blazer. They used the vss instead of a mech. speedo. Just be sure you get the right one to mate to your tranny. If you cant find the one with the right spline count you MIGHT be able to swap in the input from your current t-case.

Now that I think about it, I dont think they even used the 4500 until 92. I know they didnt in the one tons anyway.

I'm pretty sure the 3500 was used in s-10's and the 1/2 tons.

dont run a 205 unless you are running big tires and lots of horsepower, there low range sucks and are very heavy. you could keep you transfer case and run a driverside drop front axle.
