.243 or 30-06

Not sure where to put this so i put it here. Rastus please move this if its in the wrong place.

Alright fellas i have a few questions. I have a chance to pick up one of these in a trade for some wheels and tires i have but i know nothing about them. I have always wanted a good all around rifle to be able to hunt deer with but also be able to get rid of some critters. I know they are both different but which would you choose and why?

The .243 is a Ruger M77 Mark 2, has a synthetic stock and comes with a Simmons 3 9x40 scope.

The 30.06 is a Remington 740 with a Accushot 3 12x44 SWAT Scope

This will be my first rifle so any input is appreciated.

Get the .243 M77 Ruger. You will not regret it. I have the same rifle chambered in 22-250. It is an awsome platform. I wish they still made that model. Black rubberized syn. stock with stainless barell.

A 30.06 is more or less a shoulder mounted brush cannon. Not really good for anything over 100yds. IMO.

With the .243 which was the caliber I began with as a child you can hunt anything you want from turkeys to big mule deer. Think of it as a hotrod'd .308 just like a 22-250 is a hotrod'd .223

He!! all you need for whitetail is a .222 for a under 200yd body shot.

If you are planning on just white tail and small critters, I prefer the .243, elks and up I go with .300 so the 30-06 will work.

Both model is good, but I'm more of a Ruger fan.

Sounds good to me. So far i am going with the .243 because the 740 is really old. I was made in the 50s so i think i am going with the .243 Ruger.

How does the recoil of these guns compare to a 30-30?

A 30/06 is good for alot further than 100 yards, I promise. With my 7mm Rem Mag I wont shoot it at anything closer than 100 yards, it's just not fair.

I have no idea but thats a good question.

So if i go with the .243 what is a good all around cartirage? 100? 150? 180? I dont know anything about the weight differences but i do know that the bigger the number the farther it will go and the faster right?

i've hit a human target at 650yds with a 30 06 before..
grain # is the weight of the bullet itself. the bigger the # the bigger, heavier and slower but it will have more punch.

edit.. thought it was 1000yds but dad said we got out to 650. i was 13 at the time so i forgot. i know we set up a 1000yd target but couldn't hit it.

I have both and have hunted with both calibers. To me a 30-06 is a very versatile rifle that you can use to hunt a variety of game. Depending on what grain bullet you use you can make shots farther than you would ever have too. If I'm hunting in a thick type of vegetation I prefer a bigger knock down caliber than one with tons of speed. Not knocking the .243 since they are a great caliber and with the right placement you can take any size game. Just look at both of the rifles and pick the one that feels the best on your shoulder. Some rifles just don't fit!!!! And as far as both scopes on the rifles I'd use them for paper weights and buy a real scope!!!!!

I have a huge collection of guns (hunting rifles) so I really can't say which one I'd pick until I could hold both of them. Sounds stupid but it works for me. lol

The problem with the 30-06 is it has a trajectory (sp?) like a rainbow. Think lobbing a brick. If you know the drop on the bullet your ok. The .243 it alot flater and still has good knock down power. Much more forgiving if you misjudge distance.

As far as a 7mm you couldn't pay me to own one. I have seen more game crippled and lost due to that caliber than any other. It just doesn't have the sack in it.

There is a reason there are more .300 mags out there in the field than 7mm..

I know that I have to be careful with mine (7mag), if I make a headshot on a coyote, there aren't much left of the ears to take in for bounty.

What's the bounty these days???? We where told to let some of them walk (not gonna happen) down in Victoria since the deer population is getting out of hand.

Too bad they don't have a bounty on hogs!!!!!

Onlychevy6 just gettin started
Me personally, i am a remington rifle type of guy. But if it was me having to make that choice i would say the .243. That is the same caliber my wife shoots. The kick is not bad at all. Plus if the 30-06 is as old as you think then the chance of it not being real accurate is pretty high. Do you know how many rounds have been shot thru both? But like i said you won't regret the .243. Just my opinion which might not be worth .02 LOL...

I did my rearch on the remington is truly that old. The 740 came out before the 742 and the 7400. the 740 was only produced for a few years because of cycling and jamming problems. I dont know how many rounds ase thru the remington but therew are less than 30 rounds thru it. I am pretty sure i am going to get the .243 but i wont know till ive held both in my hands.
