Bad day for OldGoat II

Well, it has been a few months since I had a really bad day. Here is what happened:

Tuesday 12 noon I leave the shop in Carthage and drive to Good Springs to pick up the tower climber. He is ready to rock so we start the drive to Dallas to load the antenna and Andrew Heliax feedline and some small parts for the job near Pampa, Texas.
Tuesday 3:30PM we pull up to the warehouse and I go inside to find they still do not have my order filled so we do the waiting game. Finally we are loaded at 5:30 and pull out to head to president George Bush tollway and over to 35E northbound and of course it is backed up onto the entrance ramp. 2 hours later we are finally creeping along and make it to Denton and US 380 to turn off and head to Decatur where we will take US 287 north to Childress.
Tuesday 10 PM I learn my redheaded pasty white guy tower climber knows the words to every gangsta rap song lol and yep it is getting on my nerves big time, I change the satellite to some country music to calm my nerves and PO him. He promptly falls asleep.
Wednesday morning 2 AM my eyes are so heavy I pull into a motel in Childress to catch a few hours of sleep and then get back on the road at 7:15 AM because we have to be at the tower by 10 AM
Wednesday morning 8:30 a little north of Wellington I have a nice visit with officer Hays of the Texas Highway Patrol and a ticket for 81 in a 70 and he lets me slide on my expired inspection sticker. The tower guy snoozes through the whole thing probably deaming of the latest hits of gangsta rap.
Wednesday 9 Am we get to the tower no problem and start to unload the tools and then get the antenna out of the packing tube and lo and behold it is the wrong one, a misslabeled tube. CRAP Now I have to drive 5 hours back to Dallas and mess with the warehouse again and then 5 hours back to the tower.
Wednesday 3:15 PM stuck in a work zone on US 380 just a few miles from my turn off to get onto 35E south. I am really beginning to wonder if I will make it to the warehouse by 5PM We do get through the work zone only to get stopped a few hundred yards short of the 35E entrance ramp due to a utility truck that ran into the underpass and has both lanes blocked!!! Finally get to go and make it to Dallas and the warehouse with 15 minutes to spare and this time they have all my stuff sitting in the dock doorway and then they wonder why I cut the tube open and take the antenna out to check it lol "It is the right one" they say, I say yep that is what you said over 800 miles ago.
So we fight traffic back down to Belt Line and take the back roads to Stretch's place to see a demo of the new powdercoating system. the tower guy goes into the living room and watches gangsta rap videos lol
Wednesday 8PM we leave Stretch's and get back onto the road and have a good drive back to the tower site.
Thursday 9AM we get all the stuff ready and the company man shows up rested and fresh from a Pampa hotel. We had crahsed in the Titan at the tower site for a few hours.
Thursday 11AM after the wind has died down a little we begin to climb and then to hoist the antenna system into place. The wind got back high enough to shut us down several times and by 3PM it was looking like we might have to stay another day on this job. I have lost so much money by now I really do not care. At 3:30 the wind is settled again and we hoist the feedline up to the gangsta rapper tower man who for a reason yet unknown to me places a couple of the heavy duty tie wraps around this 375 lbs. of line and unties the hoisting gear and about 5 seconds later the whole feedline comes crashing down on top of me and the company man. 2 things saved our lives, hard hats and the fact that a cellular building and a heavy duty cable tray to support and route its feedlines was between us and the falling feedline. thank God for small favors. At this point I would have climbed up there myself and beat the crap out of gangsta rapper but the company man might have frowned on that even worse than nearly getting killed. Foe some reason the feedline was only nicked in the plastic coating a few places so i coated it with vulcanizing and tape and we hoisted it back into place with a nastly little note written by me for gangsta rapper that he better be sure the feedline is secured with the proper stainless steel clamps BEFORE letting loose of the hoisting grips this time. All goes well and the VSWR check is oerfect and we briefly consider leaving the gangsta rapper up the tower while we go eat and maybe I'll come back for him for the trip back to Carthage but we let him come with us to town where the gracious company man treated us to supper, chicken fried steak!!!
Friday morning 2 AM I drop him off at his place and head to my shop to load a base station telemtry antenna and supplies to replace another antenna that was damaged by a storm and had to be fixed right then. Saturday morning 3AM I am finally in the shower at home and ready to crash and burn. I pop the top on a cold Corona, still alive and feeling it. Ah the Corona is so good.

Gangsta Rap Man! lol

I hate weeks like that! I am really surprised you didn't grab him by the neck and strangle him.

Maybe this week will be better!

and

Needless to say he has done his last tower work for me. I have worked in this industry since 1989 and never had a safety issue let alone an accident, it could have been much worse. Before 1989 i have climbed several towers myself for the local Ham radio club and never had a problem. Gangsta rapper could not say he was tired since he slept most of the time while traveling. I have to chalk this one up to HUBS

been on a few tower jobs myself over the years and never had anything like that happen.

I can say this, on a hot summer day when the tower guy ask for a sandwich, you send it up with bread and cheese, nothing else, the mayonaise will be downright disgusting by the time it makes it up there. roflmao

I know how to climb stuff. I know how to be safe. I know how to follow instructions. I don't know lyrics to any gangsta rap crap. I have summers off.

Call me if you need a tower man this summer.

No, seriously...call on me. Sounds interesting, fun (and probably pays decent too).

That is the key to it all Hatch, if he would have payed attention all would have gone smoothly. I will keep you in mind, seriously. I own all the harnesses and fall breaker cords etc.. Probably have one to fit you! And yes, it pays very well. Current rate is $2 per foot but you have to provide the ground crew but i sometimes work that out with the tower guy to use my ground labor, will PM you with details if you wish.

dont worry, most of the jobs he does are only 100' or less. some are 400'

not many 1000'ers I dont think. i have seen one guy make it up in record time on a 400'er, never stopped to rest. got to the top, strapped in, and got to work. it is easy work and pays well. I would do it for oldgoat, but I cant go over 20' before I start shaking.

!

This was only a 250' tower and like Stretch said most of the ones we deal with currently are 60' to 110' for the telemetry. At Mooringsport La. we have some that are 1800' tall that have elevators to carry you to the work platforms where the base stations are located. I do have some beautiful shots from the tops of several towers if I can find them. The tallest tower I have ever climbed was 440' and i only had to go a little over half way up to untangle a line. We use professional tower climbers for the past 15 years or so because of insurance requirements and safety issues.
Once we had a tower job here in Carthage for ETMC where the old tower failed one day and the hospital administrator called in a panic to get the old one taken down and another put back up ASAP. I took the job and called the tower climber and got him on his way from Ringold La. and I headed off to Dallas trailer in tow to get the new tower. When I got back the tower climber did indeed have the old tower down, EHS lines cleared away and was ready for me. Unfortunately he and his crew also had a pyramid of Budwiser cans and were drunk on their butts. It was close to dark though and we just let them sleep it off and the next day erected a new tower and all was well. I am very sure Stretch and his mom remember that guy well.

We always use Trico towers. Very expensive but very good crews. We do use Ransor at times but the work can be hit or miss. Sometimes the price is so different you can pay Ransor 3 times for the job, they're bound to get it right sooner or later. Trico keep lead climbers for a very long time. Ransor seems to change out crews regularly. Says alot about managment and pay.

hmm

A few years ago I used only Rohn towers. When they pulled the little going out of business deal I had to go with whatever we could get because I had a company erecting 88 towers in the 60' to 80' range and used some Trico and some Microflect smaller stuff.
