Bad day for OldGoat III

As many already know, me and OldGoat didnt make it to Katemcy this weekend.

Here is what happened.

I was sitting at the house with all my stuff loaded up and ready for OldGoat to show up. About 2:30pm I get a phone call from OldGoat.

OG: Can you get in your truck and drive to Tyler?

me: I guess, what's wrong.

OG: I had a wreck and need help getting everything straightened out.

me: IS RUSTY OK???

OG: Yes, Rusty is ok.

me: WHEW, all that hard work is still ok. What about you?

OG: Yes, I'm fine.

me: So, what happened.

OG: I was driving down I-20 about 65mph and some guy cut me off. The trailer started fishtailing and I did 2 360's in the middle of the interstate. Rusty slid off the side of the trailer and almost rolled the whole thing. I came to a stop across both lanes and the Titan was dead. Got it fired back up and moved to the shoulder (pointing east on I-20 west). In the midst of all this something hit the rear driver tire on the Titan and blew the tire and dented the wheel. I'm under an overpass now so we have about 1.5' between me and the interstate.

me: WOW!!! I'll be there as soon as I can.

So, after that I head to Tyler (which turned out to be closer to Longview). I saw where he was sitting and got stopped and took some pictures to post. Then Brusier shows up with the stuff we need to remove the tire from the Titan. We then proceed to get Rusty back on the trailer without flopping it into oncoming traffic. After all that, OldGoat asks if I want to go to katemcy still or just head back to Carthage and relax for the weekend. I figured at this point it was prolly the safest/smartest to just head to Carthage and relax for a weekend. OldGoat was calm but you could tell he was a little shaken from all of it.

On our way back to Carthage we are driving along and an old chevy truck just rolls across the 5 lane highway with noone driving it. I could tell OldGoat was not having a good day so we couldnt wait to arrive safely in Carthage and eat supper and relax.

So, there it is. The reason we didnt make it to Katemcy for opening weekend. We were both looking forward to this for several months now. We will make the next one for sure.

Here are the pics.

Mark,
I am glad you are ok! That has to be scary! I guess it could happen to any of us at any time!

to Clint for asking how Rusty was first!

to Bruiser & Clint for coming to Mark's aid.

Was Rusty not strapped down?

OldGoat took the straps off before I got there. He was trying to speed the process up so we could beat the dark. If it hadnt of been strapped down it would have come completely off of the trailer I'm sure.

UNBEILEVEABLE!!

First for what happen to OldGoat and second, not a sole stopping to see if they could help or not for almost 4 hours.

Glad OldGoat and Rusty were okay. Also can't believe noone else was hurt!

I'm sure OldGoat's pucker factor was pretty high when he was doing those 360s in the middle of I-20.

hmm

I am still a little shaken. Here is what I have learned from this. Always wear my seatbelt which I did have on at the time. I did have Rusty very tightly strapped down front and rear and the winch line from the truck to the very rear of the hauler as well. Stretch and I looked it over we determined that the way the straps were on running one strap from the drivers side of the hauler up and through my "D' ring, through the other sides "D' ring and back down to the passenger side of the hauler let the rig slide across the trailer. From now on there will be 4 seperate straps , one to each "D" ring and the winch line to the rear. The next mistake was not enough weight on the front of the hauler, the load was biased more over the center of the hauler axles but really should have been more heavy on the tongue. The drivers side rear tire on the pickup did get cut by somehting and blew out, maybe the car that cut me off was trying to avoid the object in the road but what happened when I jacknifed was the hauler actually went under the Titan and into the rear tire and wheel and this is what seems to have bent the steel wheel so badly. It also seems an 18 wheeler can stop on a dime as the 2 trucks which were right behind me when this started did manage not only to avoid hitting me they pulled side by side into the 2 lanes and most likely kept other cars from running into me while I got restarted. I had to use 4x4 low lock to get the Titan out from on top of the trailer tongue and over to the median so I could then drive 1/10th of a mile to that overpass where at least the paved area was wide enough for Bruiser, Stretch and me to have room to get the mess sorted out. I cannot thank Bruiser and Stretch enough for going so far out of their way and it being a Friday caused Bruiser to miss time with his family. Thanks guys so very much. Truthfully I'm not sure I could have driven on to Katemcy but was willing to give it a shot. Stretch had the best idea to just return home to Carthage. We used the ruined Titan wheel and tire, Stretch's old trailer tire and a few 4x4 wooden posts to drive Rusty up onto the trailer. The beadlocks on Rusty did their job because they never came off the bead the whole time it was pulled side ways on the concrete at up to 65 MPH. I am happy to just be alive and to have friends and family willing to lend a hand. In the past I have safely operated 125 ton Ueclid coal haulers at speeds up to 65 MPH and on occassion they would try to jacknife but alternately letting off the fuel and then getting on it you could straighten things out but it just did not work in this instance. The whole spinning ordeal only lasted a minute or so but seemed like forever. My thanks to God that no other folks were hurt.

that is one busy area!!! i would have to change my pants too.
360 with truck and trailer would have to see that one day!

Too bad it wasn't a planned thing and you could have taped it. Bet that would be a bad to the bone video to watch. but when it is not planned that had to suck donkey balls!!

Great to hear you're okay and a bad situation didn't turn tragic.

Thanks for posting up about how you had rusty strapped down on the trailer, and how you plan to do it in the future. I know more than once everyone has gotten tired of the debate on how to strap a rig.

I'm glad you're alright. That must have been quite a scare. Sorry you couldn't make it, I was looking foward to wheeling with ya'll, but some things just aren't meant to be and everything happens for a reason. It could've been alot worse somewhere down the road.
I started to get worried when I didn't see ya'll Friday night or Saturday, and when I finally ran into some guys off the board they told me what happened. Again, I'm glad you're alright, the MAN upstairs was really looking out for ya.
