Can you school me on the Tyler area?

I'm thinking about taking a job as a field engineer for an oil field service company out in Tyler. I don't know much about the area, so I was hoping to get some input from y'all who have been out there. I've got a week to decide, and I'll probably try to head out there this weekend to check it out, but you can really only learn so much from driving around. My other job option is a manufacturing engineer job in the Cypress/Katy area.

Anyone have a recommendation on where to live in the area? Is there a fair amount of stuff to do there when I've got some time off? I know Gilmer is out that way, so at least I'll be close to some good wheeling.

Thanks a ton for your input folks!

That is where I am at. If you are into wheeling you will be way close to the action living there. The cost of living is way cheaper than Houston also. Lots of drilling rigs in the area to keep a hand working.

I've been looking at places to live and it does seem that I could get much more house for the money. It'd be awesome to be closer to some good wheeling. Be even more incentive to get my damn rig moving too. How long have you been in the area?

I live south of Tyler about 30 miles. I can tell you that the Bullard area south of Tyler is big $$$. Anything "nice" around Lake Palestine is pretty pricey too. There is plenty to do in Tyler, althought it has become like 10 pounds of shat in a 5 pound bag around there.
