celebrating the old man
as i grow older, my dad grows older yet. i love my old man, and even tho i see him almost daily i cant really say that i get to spend the quality time i want to with him. he retired from the county law enforcement a few years back and has been bored with life ever since. mom keeps him somewhat busy with the honey-do's but i know it leaves him empty. last year i paid him to replace the floorboards in the blazer. i cut the old boards out and he pretty much did the rest. i was reaslly suprized how eager he was to do it. i borrowed a wire feed and he loved it. he did a great job. a few months ago he bought an old rambler. its a pretty silly looking car, but he really likes it. he has been repairing the floors with fiberglass and i think it gives him a sence of acclomplishment after working on it al day.
hell, i get all good feeling after working on the blazer so i know he has to feel good about himself after scraping 30 year old dirt into his eyes and mouth, just to try to save a piece of automotive history. he has been a very big supporter of my 4x4 addiction. he is more of a rat rod/hot rod guy, but i think he enjoys watching the evolution of my truck. when i swapped motors in the blazer he helped. even tho it was january and cold, he was there to help. no cash, just help. my old man is cool.
tonight we watched the newest star trek on netflix. we share a common sci-fi interest and we have had many deep discussions about all things sci-fi. when that movie came we went and watched it on the big screen. anyhow, tonight i asked him to watch it with me, and we polished off my bottle of jim beam rye while do so. i really enjoy his company and dont look forward to a time when he isnt around. i cant stop the hands of time, but i can enjoy my old man for as long as possible.
i dont know why i am writing this, other than the fact that i get tired of posting every thought on FB. If you feel this way about your dad, tell me a story. he wont be around for ever, but his memory will

My dad went to Hidden Falls with me once. He doesn't really understand this rock crawling thing, but I think he enjoyed it.
Now he's 70 yrs old and just as active as ever. He has 30+ cattle and plays farmer/rancher every day. He just loves to be in the styx.
Here he is sitting in my "cab only" Chevy.
Here, he's watching somebody climb Jody's Revenge. When we pulled up to it, he said, "You gonna climb THAT"?, I said, "I'm gonna try".

I could write a book about my grandfather. He pretty well raised me for all intents and purposes. He is the glue that holds this family together, and thank the lord he raised me right as I am going to have to be the one to take over for him as no one else cares or wants the job. Just hope I can do as good a job as he did.
