Verizon would work if I stood in the bed of my truck at camp.

It's the middle of nowhere...if your phone is digital only, you will be SOL. Analog you have a chance. Only Verizon and Sprint still sell analog/digital tri-mode phones AFAIK.

Well if you do have Verizon and get analog sig. it will probably be roaming. just like I get out at the park. So you will get hosed with a 2.50$ a minute air time charge. Which is .

No roaming charges on my Verizon plan with a DFW phone number.

AllTel ain't a carrier in DFW I don't think; tis why I didn't know about them.

I know that Verizon doesn't list their tri-mode phones in towns with small digital "footprints." Fredericksburg I know this for sure. I suspect they don't want folks jumping onto analog (roaming charges kicked to Verizon) everytime they get 500 feet out of town. Earlier this year I was goofing online and entered a F-burg zip and shopped for a Verizon plan/phone and zero tri-mode phones came up as choices to buy on the net. Switch to Dallas zip and **poof** the trimode phones appear, even though the DFW area has enormous digital coverage (but the occassional flat spot pops up and my phone strangely jumps to analog roam in the middle of Dallas).

I was the only one with service so of course everyone used my phone.

Some Old AT&T phones that were switched to Cingular are actually on an Alltel service band. Alltel tends to be given to old AT&T customers who are located in mostly rural areas. Which would explain why 85mudblazin had a working phone and all the Alltel folks are a-okay! I'm not aware of any Alltel carriers now, but I am sure they exist. Hope this helps.

This would be news to me since AT&T and Cingular use TDMA and GSM
Alltel is and has been using CDMA of course I could be wrong.

Like I said, it was older phones and plans which I've seen show up as on Alltel bands. It's been quite a while since I've seen an old AT&T user who is now on Alltel.

Should be less of a problem now with navigation in the cab to aid me, the navigationally challenged.
The biggest problem we hit, other than my poor map reading skills was the total lack of gas stations with no ability to take credit cards after they closed the station for the evening. We went into several small towns but never found a "modern" station with the ability to allow you to fuel after hours by credit card.
Sorry to get off the subject mudgod.
