Depression

Is there anyone here that fight with depression? I have fought this for many year but the past few years I find myself slipping into the blackness more and more. I love my family very very much and makes me happy but still fall into this. What do you do if there any on here to fight it? I'm not looking for any pity, just seeing how people overcome it.

I aint a holy roller, in fact might make sunday service bout 3 times a year. But i was once strung out and in bad depression. Turned my problems over to the man up stairs. Put my trust in him and he answers my problems. Sometimes it takes awhile. Now i live to be a better person and that usually leads to a great feeling that usually makes ya happy. L IVING man

Couldn't agree more! I always try to put my best foot forward and let people see my best me but sometimes the real me inside isn't always doing that good. Those times are the times I rely on the lord to help me through. I'm my own worse enemy but I can always find comfort through prayer. Prayer groups can help if that works for you. I'm the kind of guy who likes to pray by myself. Not sure why I just do. That being said if you need someone I'm there for you.

JK.....

Honestly i totally agree with the guys above. However you have to be honest with yourself about the root of the depression. Once you have done that, you can start to dig yourself out of the dumps.

One day i realized no matter how bad i thought things were,in whatever situation, all i had to do was look around and could find others in much worse shape.

For example...I thought i was just about the uglyest mo-fo in these parts. then one day i met Harley..

You know Dustin ever since My Mom passed away three years ago. I've been in a downward spiral. Can't say that I am back where I was before that. I still live in a dump and rather embarrassed about it. There are many variables as to what gets me depressed and the list is long. Feels like the world just loves taking a crap on me. But, I've learned to cope with it. My escape is working on my rig or anyone elses for that matters. The fulfillment and joy I get seeing fellow wheelers out on the trail knowing I had a part in it. After awhile in my mind...I just let it be. No since in trying to make sense of it. When that lonely worthless feeling tries to take hold of me. My attitude changes and I use that feeling as a motivator to get out of the slump it has put me in. Other things I do is write. My mind is dark and feeling numb. As if a dark cloud is upon me and my feet feel like two tons of bricks. I write and get lost in my own little world. On occasions I'll pick up my Guitar and play/write music to ease my mind. Granted I'm no Songwriter and can't sing to save my life. But it's therapy for me to release my feelings. About the same as a good cry. I stay away from alcohol at all cost in that mind set. Nothing ever good comes out of drinking. If you have a idea what triggers the state of mind. I try and avoid putting myself their or thinking of ideas to soften the blow that would normally put you over the top. IF you're married tell your wife of your feelings. Hearing thank you or job well done from others gives you self worth. I know, I tend to forget to give the same kind words in return. Again, I enjoy helping others and expect nothing in return. There has been times when I was down on my luck....life could not get any lower. Friends and family take over and life is not so bad after all. Swallow your pride and take grip of the hand that is willing to help you. No shame No guilt No repercussion or embarrassment. We all are Human and have been down a road that is dark with no light. It gets better. Small steps. Plan small goals. Once you have that under your belt. Push yourself to take longer strides and make Bigger goals. It gives you direction and something to look forward to. If you stay stagnant .....and it happens. I find myself lost again and needing to get out. Over all it's not so bad living under a rock. hmmmm maybe that is why I'm into Rock Crawling. hop in my rig and venture out on top of the Rocks.
I'm no one special in the sense of a degree on what really works. But it works for me. I hope I shed some light on that feeling of depression and what I do to cope with it.

I know I mentioned it. But communication plays a big part. You don't have to live that emotion alone. I shut down and tried dealing with it. smiley face on the outside when my world was torn upside down on the inside.
Kick it in the @55 !!!!

agree ... went through some of that when I lost my Mom and went through a divorce ... find things you like to do or a new hobby (I took up gardening and found a new person who made me laugh a lot) ... I have tried to get my personal and financial matters back in control and that has helped. We can't take material things with us when we die so I look at doing things that make us happy - walking, gardening, dancing, rock crawling, and traveling .. it has gotten better ... you just have to make it happen for yourself. Like Mike said ... do something for others and don't expect anything in return ... makes you feel good. Find good friends to hang out with. Life is good -- believe it. Hope you feel better

Thank you guys, this site has always been a second family to me(we even have a red headed step child). Going to try a few things different and maybe get out and drag a old jeep frame out of the weeds and see if wrenching helps.

I agree with talking about it. You may not be hip to a therapist, but I have had several open my eyes up very wide.

My grandfather suffered from depression and it usually came out as anger.

He had enough one day and stuck a 357 in his mouth and ended it.

It had a profound affect on my total life as he was my world at that age.

I struggle with it too, along with many other demons of my past, but I have pledged to do everything in my power to be a success and honor his life and not his death, along with making my mom and step-dad and all of my worthy relatives proud.

No matter what, your life and the things you do matter to me.

I want you alive.

Realize that there are people that you will never know how much you mean to them.

They might not tell you for whatever reason, but they are out there and I would bet they are numerous.

I am always here for ANYONE that needs an ear.

Survive and thrive brothers.

Depression is such a bad place. Specially when it consumes at every turn. Keep as busy as possible. Try and get somethin accomplished everyday, no matter how small it may be or seem to be. That sort of thing helps me along. Being out doors is my filter/release. Being out doors around people who have that zest for life. Helps remember what is good in life. I was at a function the other day,...and saw this Jeep driver just laughin it up so hard that know one around him knew exactly what it was...he couldnt stop laughen long enough to let others in on it. It reminded me of some good times at the creek side. That laughter and happyness is contagious.

If you dont have a consistent workout plan, I would start one. I own a gym and cant count how many stories I have heard of people helped by something so simple as excercise. You want to do something that is difficult and intense as it has the highest metabolic and hormonal impact. I had an employee who wrote her Masters thesis on the effects of excercise on mental health; it is huge. If you already workout...workout harder. Seriously...
