I did that when I got out of highschool. Worked for East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. All I can say is this......take it how you want. Biggest WASTE of my time and money I have ever spent in my LIFE! I always thought that saving lives would make enough money to live on. Boy was I wrong. This was in the late 90's so consider that but I made $8.42 and hour as a EMT-Intermediate. This was in the ER. If I worked a truck I was like $6.50. Screw that. I delivered two babies.....took me about 30 minutes each so I delivered them for like $7 bucks a pop MAX, HELL NO!. Im not sure about down there but the guys I worked with were some shady son of a bucks, all the female nurses and EMT's were whores (married or not). ETMC is the biggest bunch of loosers to work for. Folks were always tryin to stab you in the back. You piss the dispatcher off (not put out when she wants) and you end up working the crap side of town hauling old folks from nasty nursing homes to there doctor appointments or an hour before you get off you get a transfer that is two hours away. That is my thought on the profession. Dont let me rain on your parade but I wished someone would have told me all this before I got into it. One positive. It got me out of several speeding tickets and a couple of DWI's.....lol. Good luck.

Better you than me. Being a medic or fireman would be a great job if it wasnt for all the blood and running into burning buildings. Everybody should donate to your local fire dept. Because when you do something dumb they come get you and you want them to have the best equipment.

No worries, good, bad or ugly I'd like to know..

One company is paying Paramedic's 300 bucks for a 24hr shift; Granted I'm only going to be a Basic but it's a goal...

I'm ok with the blood and guts, not so much the running into burning buildings part; Thats why I'm going strictly EMS...

A medic is ALONG way off from a basic. Medic school was tough. $300 a shift is not that much really. Depending on where that is located.....im thinking maybe Houston since you are so close. You are gonna run your butt off all day and night. By saying this it means you cant work but about 2 of them, maybe 3 a week if you get some sleep. Thats $900/wk max. Prolly more like $600. I know I couldnt pay my bills on $2400/month. Not saying you cant and once again not trying to rain on your parade. If thats what you wanna do then go for it. Im thinking as a basic you are gonna get prolly a max of $200/shift.

Around here it seems the only way to make any money being a medic is to also be a fireman. Most of our private ambulances are just transfer services and basics make abt min wage. The FD requires us to be at least basics unless your hire date was after sept of 08 (i Think) then you have to also be a medic.
I do it because i enjoy it and it usually is fairly exciting. If its a money issue I wouldnt consider it. There are LOTS of other jobs with better pay and better hours ,but if its something you truly want to do then go after it.

I totally agree, medic is miles apart from a basic, but I gotta start somewhere; I'm in Conroe and its a small company based out of the New Caney/ Splendora area... Mostly gonna be transport with some ems/ 911 mixed in..

2400/ month wont be bad especially when you add it to the 3k my wife currently makes; I do pain to get my Medic but right now some money is better than no money...

Thanks, like I said I have no real interest in going the FD route; But yeah in most areas FD and EMS are rolled into one now..

Also to anybody on the fence about getting into it.

I've heard Scuttlebutt that Starting in 2011 .tx/ .gov? is about to drop the basic classes/ license; So you'll have to go straight to medic, which is 2-3 times the price, and time involved of the basic classes...
