First Texas Ticket

Yep, dangit, I got my first ticket on Tuesday. The problem is I wasn't speeding or anything like that. I was headed south on a two-lane road, and the officer was headed North. We passed and I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, so I paid no attention to him. Well just a minute later, he's behind me with his lights flashing, so I start to pull over assuming he's going right by. Nope, he follows me. I didn't have any reason to be pulled over, so I was really confused. he says "I pulled you over because your inspection sticker is expired." Sure enough it was. He asks for insurance and drivers license. I give him my license and begin digging thru my glove box for insurance. It's not there. I know I put it there, but I can't find it. So I get a ticket for both.

Now first of all, this officer must have been low on his quota for the day. how often do folks get pulled over for no other reason then their inspection being expired? I'm new to Texas, I sorta knew I needed to have a valid inspection, but my plates were up to date, so I just assumed my inspection was too. Oops.

This is where I need your help. So I call the courthouse and they say I owe over $500. I said I had insurance, it was just not in the car. She said, well if you can provide proof, we'll remove that ticket. Whew, that was a big chunk of it. My question now, is should I go to court and try to and plead that i am new to the state and am learning the laws, or should I just pay the fine and be done? If I go to court, do I risk paying the fine plus court costs? We're talking Kendall County/ Beorne.

Thanks for your help...Live and Learn

It's been my experience, that if you get it inspected before you appear in court, and bring the paperwork for it, they'll drop the charges.

the inspection was done last night, it would have been sooner if the shop wouldn't have ran out of stickers.

Will I still have to pay court costs then, or is this handled before I get to the judge?

I believe it'll be taken care of before you get to the judge.

Also, if you show them that you had insurance at the time, that ticket will be dropped as well. You may have to pay $15 or so in court fees. I think that's about what I had to pay when I got my no inspection/no proof of insurance tickets. (although I got pulled over for speeding. written warnin' on that one).

Go to the court house with proof of your insurance and inspection. Be polite and courteous and they will likely dismiss it with a small dismissal fee. I got a ticket last year for registration sticker and no insurance. I was registered, but didnt have the sticker on the windshield and my current insurance card was at the house. The insurance was easy to get dismissed, they just called the insurance company to make sure the papers were legit. The sticker was a little tougher since it had been out nearly 9 months, but I did manage to talk the judge into dismissing it.

How long has the sticker been out? You could use the excuse that you havent driven the vehicle in a while and just got it running again and hadnt made it by to get it inspected.

Then again, if it's anything like the city court here it'll be difficult no matter what.

In my experience do it as quickly as possible. I got pulled over on a wenesday with the expired sticker. I was ticketed for the sticker only even tho I couldnt find my insurance. A very nice cop. The inspection was expired like 5 months over tho

I got it inspected the next day, and they dropped the ticket for 10 bucks. The judge said it proved that there was no real reason for the truck not to be inspectable and showed it was just an oversight.

I think mine expired in July... I think I had owned the car less than a month. I just wonder if this is something I can handle on a lunch break, or should I take the afternoon? This is in the Beorne courthouse, so i would think it's slower than one in SA.

i think your lucky. if i remember right they changed the law so that if you do not have insurance on your vehicle their susposed to impound it. thats one of the only reasons i have insurance on my beater. but i could be wrong and i guess its always good to have insurance either way. in the past ive done what they told you above numerous times (different infractions) and it works. good luck!

gmarblestone just gettin started
When i got my out of date ticket i simply contacted them via phone and they told me to send in the proof and 7 bucks or something like that. Didnt even go to court. You might want to call and see if they have something like that. Then again, in houston things might be different.

Good Luck

Don't forget we are on a points system. 1 point non moving violation and 2 points for moving violation.....something like that...anyway, I believe it is a 12 month rotating period. After 6 points you will have to pay for a sr22 or fine...something like that or get your D.L. suspended. I have a family Member having to pay $350 No Pay. No Driveers license.
of course he was busted for no insurance and D.L. (has it now) twice and some moving violations along with it. It's doesn't pay to play around and drive with out some insurance.
