Heheh. They say you can never go home...but you can...sorta.

My first diesel REAL tow rig was a used '01 Ram 2500. My "new" diesel tow rig is a used '01 Ram 3500

Quad Cab
Cummins 131,000 miles (that's how you buy 'em cheap)
Automatic
dually
4x4
SLT leather
This thing has options I didn't know you could get on a truck!

Way cheaper payment than before; not so upsetting to have this big'un sitting a lot of the time.

I WILL NEVER BUY BRAND-SPANKING-NEW AGAIN.

No reason to; there are excellent used vehicles out there. I just traded one in!!

Like this, only green and no color matched bumper. Alcoa aluminum wheels too. Gooseneck already in the bed. Rhino lined. New tires all around.

Oh...and another from the "what goes around comes around" category:

"What color did you say your new truck is Mr. Hatcher?"

There's a trip down memory lane!
Didn't occur to me that I'd owned a green Dodge before until I looked at it in the daylight this evening.

I really wanted manual.

Do you know how hard it is to find used manual HD trucks that still have some life left in them?

I had a 2000 identical to that one. Tranny went at 75k, traded in w/ 130k on second tranny. I think if you keep the fluid fresh it helps, I didn't change it once on the first tranny, but I had a 100k warranty and figured it would take a crap before that, and it did.

Not that it really matters, but mine was only rated to tow somewhere around 8 or 9k lbs with the auto. Kinda startled me when I discovered this, but I towed heavier stuff with it and it worked okay.

The autos can be built to handle alot of power and torque, but it ain't cheap.

redbeard just gettin started
My company uses one ton dodges to haul the 10K+ trailers around the U.S. from south TX all the way up to northern Wyoming. They seem to get a lot of mileage out of them. The highest mileage Dodge they have has over 550,000 miles on it. They all have the Cummins Diesel, of course, but I think almost all of them have had tranny work done numerous times except for the brand new ones.

Hatch....tell me about it. I was searching and searching for a decent manual and settled for the one I had. When the tranny started going at around 106,000 I got rid of it and bought a new CTD 600 with a 6 speed.
You can get a deeper aluminum pan for them. That will help take some of the heat out of them and add more ATF capacity. The other ****, valve body, torque converter etc. are $$$ Keep it clean (new fluid, new filter) and keep the bands adjusted regularly (easy to do).

Thanks for the heads-up Rob.

131k miles. I'm betting this was a hot-shot rig (commercial vehicle inspection sticker and the Alcoa rims of a wanna-be big-rig driver). Reckon the tranny has already been rebuilt once? It feels/drives really nice. Good solid shifts.

I am sure it did. Mine was a commercial company truck for a big wig. The bed wasn't scratched, had leather seats, the hitch wasn't used and it had the DOT stickers.

The gooseneck in the bed looks really high quality, like maybe it's one of those pop-up or hide-away hitches. I don't know how one of those operates. What do I look for? Where's the lever or whatever?

Sweet!

After a close inspection of the build sheet I had printed before I left Bankston Dodge and a close inspection of Dually I find I have:

Engine block heater (which is plugged in right now to see if it still works)
Radio controls on the steering wheel!!!

I told you: this thing has options I never would have thought of finding on a truck.
