Hide-a-way Gooseneck

New ride definitely has one: I found the lever inside the left rear wheel well. I pulled on the lever and moved it forward a bit and it locked in position. The ball didn't move. I climbed in the bed and stomped on the ball with moderate force. The ball didn't move.

Anybody ever worked with one of these? Is there more than one brand, one style of operation?

Yes, Yes and Yes.

It would help if you could find the make. I'm familiar with a few of them, but not all.

Does yours have plenty of grease on everything? If not lube everything up that moves, that will help.

It might be a lift and flip I guess.

I have time to figure it out...nothing but bumper pull in the forseeable future.

By the looks of your pics it looks like it might be a B&W turnover ball brand. Does the brackets that go to the frame rail bolt on?

B&W "Turnover Ball" is what the label (that was under road grime) says. The ball itself is greased for towing, but the ball didn't easily pull out for turn over. I will try again on another day with better weather and more available time.

a buddy of mine got one on his truck, we like it cause you can lower it for hauling wood and such then bring it back up to pull with.

they was pulling a 29' trailer i think Loaded down with construction pipes(pipes filled with cement). no problems from it.

Label on the side says 30,000 lbs gross. I reckon that allows a little extra strength beyond what I will ever pull

You've got a good one, no doubt about it. The ball should come out if the lever is pulled out all the way. Then you just drop it back in the same hole upside down, whola it's no longer in the way.

If you pull enough with it it will get floppy and you will feel the play while going down the road. The hide a balls sure are convienent though.
