Just curious.....

What is it all you guys like so much about rock crawling?

The way I see it, you guys build some fabulous rigs to go slow over large rocks to sometimes rolls or sit side ways trying to climb things that were not meant to be climbed in 100+ degree heat.

Help a guy who has always played in the mud who likes 5,000-7,000 rpms slinging mud, digging holes, doing donuts, and throwing rooster tails understand this.

I like the technicality of it and pushing the limits of the equipment. And I dont have to worry about rocks sticking to the truck and making a mess. lol

One could ask the same about mud I guess.

Not all rock crawlers are slow. Texascrambler on here has NOS and a trans brake...makes for a good show.

I guess that is a lot of it. Looking at something that doesn't look doable then trying it. When we went to Penrose I looked at the exit and said that there was no way anything was making that.

It's not always 100+ degrees out.

I love hauling a** thats one of my favorite parts of wheelin

its not all about rocks, hills and gulleys are fun to run. I don't hit the extreme stuff so to me its just about seeing what you can and can't do and enjoying it...

For me, it's hitting the trails and just climbing stuff. The rocks don't stick to everything like mud does and occasionally, you do find a small water hole to play in. I like the technicality of the climbs, the off camber situations and to put it simply, the adrenaline rush once you make it up and over something someone said couldn't be done. I will go play in the mud from time to time, but I'm tired of cleaning up the mess.

for me it about the scenery, most all the time mud is on flat land.also the element of danger seems to be more present in rockcrawling and not so much of that feeling of being stuck in a rut....

Frog said it. The great views does it for me. When I'm behind the wheel of my rig and I'm doing some big rocks the feeling I get is pure joy. Also with rocks it not about having the biggest rig. Sometimes the guy with the smalling will out do a bigger rig.

You can do all that stuff AND do the technical/trail stuff in a crawler that you often can't in a mudder

plus crawlers just look cooler! (off to the mall for me)

The challenge, the rush of it all that lasts several days after, the fact the most expensive rig doesn't always win unlike in other motorsports, the beautiful scenery, the fact you can go over a rock in a vehicle is just amazing..........who would have thought that?

I have nothing against rock crawling. I can see the challenge and the accomplishment of getting your vehicle over some pretty rough terrain. But I guess it's the childlike fun of getting all dirty, slingin' mud, spinning tires, stucks and recoveries that makes mudding all the better.

With either type of wheeling, skill is required. You just can't simply hammer down in mud and expect to get through everything. It doesn't always work that way. I can see the real technical ability in rock crawling as you really need to know your vehicles cabilities and it's that knowledge that really comes through when you're trying to climb an obstacle 4x the size of your rig.

Each has it's place. But for me, I'd rather get dirty and sink, then constantly break and dent. It's much more fun!

I know mud that were i started at like most here did. But it gets old. The rush gets less and less over time. If i want motor roring go to the track its cheaper. Hell i still got my mud rig out back. i still got plans for rockwells and 46"+tires. One day.
To a point in muding you need up with the largest tires and most hp motor.

Crawlin.
I like the technicality of it and pushing the limits of the equipment. Knowing you built it (most times) your tring to do more then whats let built to do. Getting to travel is really cool. Seen the U.S. Not the same two or three park year after year. Fast has always got me in trouble. You should have seen my driving wreckared acouple years ago.

So what I understand other then cleaning, we like the same. Technialitiy, speed, scenery, traveling, seeing if what we built can conquer the obsticle. Not everything muddy is easy, or everyone can get through.

I always just looked at rock crawling as guys who like to run 2-4,000 rpms doing 2mph up a rock.

I guess as long as we are all safe, friendly, helping one another, having a blast and enjoying what we are doing, we all are in the same boat.

Man, I was all about the mud. That what I was building the Zombie(78k10 with a bbc) for. To me rock crawling was slow and boring. I grew up around a dragstrip, going fast was all there was, anything not fast was not kool. Then a friend took me to Gilmer for my first other than mud off roading experience. I was sold! It's suck a rush! I'm not downing you by this question, I honestly dont know but have you ever been, even as a passenger, rock crawling? If not, I say try it, even if it's just once, even if you find out that it is what you thought it would be, just try it.

P.S. never had a rock fall out from under the truck and hit me in the face while working on it.

Yes, just like that. All that time wasted to only end up right next to the Jeep that went up the easy part. Had he gone up the bigger part where he was trying that would have been impressive. When you have to go right next to the Jeep to get up in a rig built like that, come on. That is not what I think of when I say Rock Crawling. That is trail rideing in my mind. I would be willing to take my Mudd truck and do that. I'm taking about like what I think of at Trees or K Rocks. Flat land with mountains of rocks. Not hills, mudd, trees, creeks and trails but ROCKS, GRANITE, GRAVEL.

Mitch, no I have never been rock crawling and not at all offeneded. This is why I asked. I was able to play in "The Slabs" in Marble Falls before they were shut down.

PS....That is one bad arse rig

For me it is the adrenaline - not only most all the stuff said here - technialitiy, speed, scenery, traveling, seeing if what we built can conquer the obsticle, etc... But how I feel when I get up that HUGH rock - especially by myself. I am still learning about this sport and the more I do it the more I love it. I would have never thought I could win 3rd place in a rock race across the rock garden at Gilmer - But I did!! And having helped built the truck makes it even more of a "high" to me.

And those who said the bigger is not always the best are very true - I have proven that with our truck -- not alot of money sank into it and it can go some places those $40,000 rigs cant but there are alot of rigs that can do stuff we cant too -- it does work both ways!!

My 2 #1 things why loving this sport - 1. adrenaline and 2. I dont have to wash all the mud off when I am done!!

Daryl you need to come get in our truck when Dan is driving -- it is nothing fancy but you would be amazed at what he can do with it and probably have a great understanding of why we love rocks!!
