monthly spending/budgeting

Does anyone on here keep exact tabs on there monthly spending? Just curious on a couple of items like gas and food?

Me and my wife spent

$539 last month on gas and cigarettes.
$262 on eating lunch last month

These figures seem high to me but was curious as to what others were spending on these two things. Please only respond if you actually know the exact $ amount you spent on these items. The only reason I know is because of my credit card statement. Just seems odd that I have to work a full week to smoke, drive to work and eat lunch. That doesnt include the price of my car, dinner and all the other monthly bills.

Tabitha keeps track of every dime I spend. She has "Money, Small Business 2006" on her computer, and uses it to keep track of everything.
Lunch last week = $64.95 or 298.48 a month.
Tips last week for lunch = $12.00 (I always round up)
Gas in my truck was $1,387.28 last month.
She even has a spot in there for 4x4 spending. It's something she does now that she is a stay at home mom.

We do, but after the fact. I track a lot of that stuff for tax purposes. I can assure you, though, tracking your spending is not the same thing as budgeting your money.

We do not budget and we have suffered for that stupidity.

Sorry I do not have the exact figures for you Stretch. I have a company truck and credit card that I do not see the statement on. It is also dependent on how the weeks go. I have gone to where I only fuel twice a week and spend $200 and I have seen it where I go through a grand a week. I carry my lunch to work in my lunchbox and do not smoke. I also drink but usually only at ocasions. Like wheeling events .

As much as I like not answering to anyone.............I do like kids and want some soon.
Now do I get a Russian bride and leave her at home to cook, clean, and have my kids?
or?
Do I get a wife with brains and speaks english so she can tell me not to spend money on toys, I don't cuddle enough, I like my wheeling and friends more, etc etc?

Yep like 3 fully grown crybaby stepkids who think mommy, grandmommy and "RICH" stepdaddy should pay their way while they sit on their rear at a house provided by mommy and do nothing, except smoke dope all day that is.

Oh well I kinda got off the subject Stretch, but one thing about trying to budget is when the situation changes on you in the middle of the month. Like gas going up to and past $3 a gallon when you budgeted $2.25 a gallon. A budget is nice but it is not the end all cure all, it is a baseline method to plan how you wish to spend your income each month or year. The longer you live the more you will learn there is always something lurking around the corner to eat up your nest egg. It does not have to be a rise in fuel cost. It could be an unexpected hospital stay or your plant closes down and you get laid off. You just have to be ready to roll with it and adapt, QUICKLY. Do I practice what I have just preached, yes. I have worked 3 jobs to make it because the plan went to hell. No major problem if you just keep trying and never give up on life. It is easy for a multi million or billion dollar company to make a budget and stick to it. It is almost impossible for the average working man and woman to do it. IMHO there are just too many unforseen events that could come along. Instead of worrying when the next one will hit, just deal with them as they come, save as much money as you can and remember you cannot take any money with you when you are gone, it is not your job in life to drive a POS vehicle, work overtime and drink only water so your kid can slack off in college, get drunk every night and drive a new BMW with plenty of coke to blow. And the best advice I have been offered and would like to offer is "we are all broke at different levels."

Old Goat you are 100% correct. It's very hard to stick to a budget on a persinal level. I did it when I had my company running and that is a bit different.
I think you need to budget your main expenses but the main thing is investing and saving some cash.
You will most likely need it later.

PS Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
