Mud Engineers, got a question for ya'll

When calculating the Buoyancy Factor in Mud you use the formula

BF=(65.5 - mudweight(ppg) )/ 65.5

Where did that 65.5 number come from?

Also does this apply for brine water? Just use the 65.5 number?

You use the same formula for brine water. Just plug in how much your brine water weighs in ppg.

What do you use .052 for

The 65.5 is the weight of steel in lb/gal. The sp of steel is 7.85. (7.85 x 8.345= 65.50825)

Thanks!

I remember that number from Material Science but forgot what it stood for at the moment and it was driving me nuts cause I was thinking I knew it.

Also thanks for clearing up the brine water issue!

In all my years of muddin', I've never heard of this. It's very interesting to me. What is the formula to calculate whether you are a floater or a sinker? What is the optimum value you want to achieve?

Well if you want to be a floater you will need to get your buoyancy factor down below 50%. Before explaining any further, I will explain you about the basic concept of Buoyancy. Buoyancy is the upward force that keeps things afloat. The upward buoyancy force equals to the amount of the weight of fluid displaced by the body volume. This force will make objects lighter when it immerses in fluid. you know that we feel lighter when we are in swimming pool because this is the effect of buoyancy.

So if you want you rig to float you can do two things, Run way bigger rubber, or seal off your engine bay, bed and cab so no water can get in like a boat.
