OldGoat hits the big city and the big city hits back

Made it to Houston Sunday evening, nice hotel, nice roomate, crappy parking and a blind security guard. My pickup which was parked right under a huge light was broken into sometime monday night or tuesday morning early. The lowlife stole my briefcase, cellphone, $25 in money, a bag with batteries in it, my LED flashlight, my riggers bag full of hand tools and made a mess of my pickup.
However you look at it I have to take part of the blame for not taking everything up to my room. I was just tired after the trip. The lowlife did not take my mig , welding helmet, a new Cb radio and several speakers and antennas, nor did they take the fuel cell from the bed of the pickup.???
The school I am attending is great, lots of very knowledgable instructors!!!! I also like the company very much. There is a lot to learn. I hope I do well. We have gone over a lot of ground, learning lots of math formulas and doing some lab work too. Lots of math yet to learn and lots of lab work. The company has a very well equipped lab and lots of engineering staff in the lab who are very much help to we newbies lol
Got to go study now, more later. Sure miss wheeling.
Mark

Houston

Thanks for all the comments. Yep the school is work related. OldGoat learns new tricks! I'm enjoying the challenge. Mudgod went over a lot of the math with me before the school which helped. Problems that were taking me too much time to complete are now done in a normal amount of time so I'm progressing. We also spent some time going to different rigs to get a good look at the parts of the rig and what they do. Funny how you can drive by drilling operations for decades and never "see" all the components and what they do. In just one short week we covered atoms, molecules, volumetrics, math formulas, rig terms, safety and very basic chemistry as it relates to this job. Just scratching the surface.
There is a good pizza place nearby, a Sams and a Walmart and of course Whataburger lol For those of you who live in a city large enough to have these "luxuries" every day you are so lucky!
One thing I failed to mention earlier is how I hate the traffic snarls. Each day it takes about 20 minutes to go just a few miles. I feel sorry for those of you who have to endure this traffic every day. I've learned to just enjoy the radio on the drive!
Really looking forward to a good supper with Xanthias and a cold . Sounds like he has the place lined up. Most of the evenings are spent reviewing the days work and the weekends are used to go over the previous week so a break from this routine will be welcome.

It will be nice to get home! After 18 years of being self employed it is nice to know there will actually be a paycheck each month lol It is going smooth as possible, after being nervous at 1st I have settled down and am able to put my mind to the task.

update

I have been back in East Texas for the past week working on my 2 weeks of field training. It is going well. Mudgod put me with a very experienced mud engineer. This guy is teaching me so much practical stuff. I feel much more confident now. I spent one day on a rig with Mudgod and another one of his engineers and learned how to mix a heavy mud. I must say, Mudgod really knows his stuff about the job. He is a very patient boss so I'm lucky there. There is a lot to learn and it will take time to get it all right. This is not a job where you want to make a mistake and get some person hurt or damage some very expensive equipment. The company works as a huge team I have learned. All you have to do is ask a question and an answer will come. This morning we started the day at 4 AM because the guy teaching me had a birthday party for his daughter planned for later in the day. It turned good that we started so early as one of the rigs had a major problem due to not following the mud engineers prescription for the drilling fluid. He calmly examined the cause of the problem and made some suggestions and all should turn out well. I leaned some valuable info from the situation just like I did the day Mudgod had me watch what they were doing on the other rig. Just one thing, my notebook is getting full of notes lol
Bottom line, I'm really loving the new job.

One of my son's is a mud logger, works most of the time in Wyo. Some of the wells up there, south central , I believe, they have to use diesel to mix the mud , instead to water. All the crew kind of hates those wells, stinks all the time. Best of luck in the East Texas oil fields.

We call that oil based mud. It does a lot better with the higher bottom temps in that area.

oil based is great!! it sticks in your hair, never gets out of your clothes! instead of washing clothes you just wear them for 2 weeks then set it on fire and buy a new set!!!

Glad to hear you like the job! there is alot to be learned in mud, not just how fast to drive through it!!!!!!!!!

mud

NewPark Drilling Fluids LLC
We also have some mud engineers in our class who will be in the Rocky Mountains.
I really do not care for the OBM (oil based mud), we had some in the lab and of course have to learn it and the synthetic mud as well. All the rigs I'm learning on are WBM (water based mud) and that is fine with me lol
Heck, I'm just glad to have a steady paycheck and if they send me to a rig with OBM I will haul myself right on up or down there.

The mud engineer is very important on a well, lots of safety relies on those guys. Well my young one, does just what you said you would do., gets in his LJ rubi, and drives up to rocksprings, gets stuck for months, but it is a good paycheck. He is near Pecos tonight, oil co, let the rig go in Wyo. to many safety concerns.
One real good thing about about the area, he works Wyo, Colorado, Utah, NM, and Texas. Has been to Moab several times in his LJ, so he gets to do the wheeling and work. Lots of Colorado wheeling in Ouray area also. Pretty country. Kind of cold in winter .
