Question...
If you worked for a large company and they told you that there would be a mandatory meeting at a location 5 hours away would you expect them to pay for your fuel to get there? No options to rent a van or anything like that just you driving your car there. Whatchu think?

That's why we use WebEx.
![]() But to answer your question, I would at least expect to be paid for the time spent driving and the going rate for mileage. That's how previous companies have done for me anyway.

The things that will happen at the meeting will require physical activity so webex isn't an option. That would be cool just not an option in this case.

Well if they make it mandatory then they can hold ya to it. Would you rather drive 5 hours and keep your job or say f it and not have a job after the meeting is over and you didnt go......thats kinda the way i see it.

Yes you should be paid for your time and gas rate, I think its up around .45-.50 a mile. Im gussing you wont be back home that day, so they need to give you a room and perdim.

I would look at labor laws for sure because its is different for exempt and non exempt employees. This is coming from someone who once in awhile listens to his wife talk about work as a CPA. |

Current GSA rate is $0.565/mile. Just got paid to drive to and from Oswego, NY. If they don't pay you for it, you can write it off on your taxes at the end of the year.

Hard to see them holding it against you, if it was me I couldn't go because I couldn't pay for my fuel.

Thinking this might be what gets said. Kinda put the ball in there quart so to speak. They will either step up and volunteer to pay or tell me I'm fired in which case I could report them.

Sounds like what a shitty company calls a "problem employee" lol
Travel time and fuel outside commuting are paid by law

I would use the fuel excuse.
However, you may want to check your employment contract to see what the travel clause says. You may have agreed to accept expense responsibility.

We have manditory meetings all the time on Sat and we don't get paid jack for it.
But I'd have a hard time driving 5 hours and not getting paid for it. .

I would either get paid for fuel, time, lodging or I would not go.
I make trips to DFW for training, I get paid a lesser rate than if I was at work but I do get paid. I have to keep all my reciepts and submit them, and they reimburse me later. Your expenses are tax deductable, but unless you itemize your taxes and your expenses are greater than the standard deduction you still lose money. I itemize my taxes because I buy tools and other work expenses too. |

I think it depends alot on what you do and how you are compensated. I used to travel for a living and I always got mileage and per dium. I was also on salary, so if it took 3 days or 6 days for the weeks work the pay was the same although there was a minimum hourly expectation for a week.
If you work by the hour in a store every day, then I would expect to be paid for everything. If some travel is expected as part of your compensation package or it is not out of the ordinary to travel some distance, then I would not expect you to be paid. Need more details IMHO.

I'm a local route driver and never have to stay out of town. None of the guys here do. As far as I know not one of the employees state wide have to stay anywhere over night. I've never even been to the place I'm going. It's just the place we "report" to. Amarillo, Lubbock, midland, Odessa and I think a few others report to San Angelo. We are the farthest away.
Called a driver I know in Lubbock to ask him about it and he said they told them it wasn't a mandatory meeting so none of the drivers or managers from there are going....so it sounds like Corprate is saying one thing and our immediate managers are saying another.. The chit might hit the fan when I get back today. |

I would just go and pay out of pocket for the gas. A good job is hard to come by for some. I have never had a problem but depends on the trade.

If I took my truck it won't quite make it 5 hours. So probably two and a half tanks. Probably a lil over $200.
