RV Tow Rig. questions

This is my current Tow Rig set up.

I'm not real happy with it. Mostly I'm unhappy with the 6 mpg I'm getting and the small living area of the slide-in-camper, but at 28,000#'s it is a little heavy for my truck.

I have thought about buying a 52ft fully enclosed trailer. And while the tongue weight would be lighter with this set up, my mpg would still be low and I'm not sure I could get much more "living" space out of it this way. Plus I run into the over lenth of the tow rig and trailer. 65 ft bumper to bumper is the law and with my 4 door tow rig I would be over that rule.

So, I need a RV tow. I'm thinking I can get a bumper pull trailer that is long enough to hold my two rigs. 27-30 ft would be long enough and if I got two 7k axles under it it would almost be over kill for my rigs.
With the bumper pull trailer in mind and the 65ft law that means I could buy a RV that is 30-35 long, I know the trailer has a tongue lenth also, but I might be willing to cheat some on that footage.

Has anybody else looked into this type of set-up? I would like to find a brand of RV that is more practical and so much into the luxury. I also want a RV that will be able to pull the kind of loads I'm talking about at speed and still have better MPG than I'm getting now. I think 10-12 mpg in a RV would be great, but I'm sure 8-10 would be more like it.

To pull what you want to pull safe and with good fuel economy you will need a diesel pusher. The ones built to handle that much tow capacity are in the 35-42' range.

They call these a Puller or a FRED (FRont End Diesel)

http://www.rvsuperstore.net/dynamax.html

But at $200,000 they are way out of my price range. I'm sure they would be ideal for towing and give me the extar room I want. I would bet the mpg would be great also.

How about switching out the tow rig? Also, DOT is getting pretty damn hard on "suspicious" loads, especially down here...but they may just be involved in decreasing drug trafficing...

Swithing out tow rigs still gives me 28,000# GCW and a bigger tow rig could be even more weight. So, a better/bigger tow rig might give me a little better mpg, but I'm really wanting to get away from the slide-in-camper/trailer. It doesn't work as good with a two rig trailer as it did with a one rig trailer.

I'm also looking at something like this because I could pull a gooseneck trailer, but it would cut down on living space.

Here is a better pic of a Toter

This can pull over 40,000#'s and has a 19' box

Go to racingjunk.com they have those things all over it. Talk about $$$ though!

You aint gonna get anybetter fuel mileage man, not much anyway. A semi gets 7-8 mpg empty and 4-5 loaded.....at least a cool Peterbilt. I averaged 4.75 in mine the last year I drove it and that is loaded and unloaded miles. I think the queer looking ones get like 6-7 loaded....but not much more bobtail. Even at 10 mpg how much more are you really saving. On a 2000 mile trip (this is just number crunching) you would save about $300 bucks at $2.30 fuel. I guess that is quite a bit but how often do you do 2000 mile trips? You aint gonna get over 10mpg with ANYTHING IMO. Powerstrokes suck for fuel mileage anyway but we done been down that road together.....LOL!

MPG is not the main reason I'm looking. I know my Powerstroke has all the power I need. The Ford pulls my loads great up and down the hills, you have been with me on some of my trips. I just hate to kill the truck before it time.

I'm looking for a bigger RV, but I what one that will handle a load. Cesil (sp?) from longwiew driveshaft has one of this Motorhomes and is plling two rigs behind it. He said he has no problem running 80-85 and he is getting 9-10 mpg. I never really wanted a RV because they get such a low mpg, but if I'm already getting 6-8 mpg I might as well get somethingwith more room.

Well one of those toterhomes or whatever you wanna call them is the ticket I think. Cause you still have somewhat of a truck. I think a slick 2.5 ton with western hauler bed with 40' or so enclosed would be cool. Dont compare it to your 40' trailer cause you have ALOT of wasted space with that camper mounted up there. You enter the side of those enclosed and the space is wall to wall.

http://www.oodle.com/view/1999-GMC-C...391677049/usa/

I've looked for a deal on a Toter home for years. Racingjunk.com will have more options but most of those guys know what they have and will not give them away. A decent toter is going to run you over a 100 grand plus the trailer.

We are just looking at getting a full size rig and building a box on the back of it to use as a toter home (Uhaul box converted into a camper). We've had a few good deals slip through the cracks so if you find a deal on one you better jump on it.

That could be an idea because the wife and I really like the room in our pop-up camper, but really we are want to step up to something bigger/nicer.

If you get a RV/Toter definitely get the biggest diesel motor you can afford. You will need it with all that weight you will be pulling.

michael0584 will become famous soon enough
You could do something like this but have it to where you could pull a small trailer behind for the extra rig. It would be alot of work but probably fairly cheap compared to other solutions.
