Shopping for a Tow Rig

I'm looking at swapping my gutless dodge (01 Ram 1500 w/ a 3.9L V6, great college truck) for something a little bigger, and diesel.

I'm looking at getting either a 93-97 power stroke with a 5 spd or a 94-98.5 cummins with a 5spd. Yes, I realize these are 10-14 yr old trucks, but I figure that if I do some careful shopping I can find a good one. As far as the fords go, I don't like the looks of the later models, they are [email protected] ugly IMHO. As far as the dodges go, I figure that the 12V cummins is my best bet for simplicity and longevity. I don't want an automatic, as I've never had good luck with an automatic while doing heavy towing (like with the Screwball on a trailer) plus I LOVE to jam gears.

What I need to know: What do I look for in these trucks, as far as problems go? What are the quirks and bugs that these trucks have?

PS: I'm not trying to get the Cummins v. Power Stroke debate riled up, or the auto/stick debate either. I know both have their positives and negatives, but I'm just looking for the bugs that each drivetrain/truck has.

I would stay away from the PS, they seem to crap the bed not long after 100K. The 98.5 Cummins is the most sought after cause you can get the 3rd door with the 12V.

This one is on CowtownJeeps.com

'98 Dodge Ram
12 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel
188k miles
5spd Manual Transmission
Quad Cab, Long Bed
Cruise Control
Power locks/windows
Rear sliding window (yeah baby!)
Bed Rails for 5th wheel/goose neck
Towing Package
Tekonsha Brake Controller
Spray in bed liner
New tires put on March '06, still in great condition.

Oil changed every 3k miles, rear axle/transmission fluids changed recently. This truck runs strong, nothing wrong with it. Get the benefits of the updated cab, with the strength and reliability of the 12v diesel.

Couple other notes, it's got 4" exhaust all the way back, catalytic converters removed. Also has a pyrometer and boost guage on the dash. I believe it's got a different fuel plate as well. I never took it apart to check it out, I just know that it scoots when you step on the go pedal!

I've also got a custom built shell for the bed, goes back flush with the top of the cab that I'll include. I'll try to get pics of it.

$9000 OBO

If you go Ford - get a 7.3 liter - that is the best motor they make - just my 2 cents

I kinda thought that might be the case, just figured I'd be a lil ornery and give ya'll a hard time.

I'm in the process of crunching numbers, trying to figure out if I can afford that one or not, really need to go sit down with my loan officer and get it drawn up

I had a 91' cummins (you know, the ugly ones) i could have welded the hood shut without worry. A friend has a 96 Powerstroke and has dumped Thousands into it and its a 5sp. I currently have an 03 1-ton 4door dually 6spd. I love it but the dodges are known to fail miserably as far as interior goes. Im not a big dodge fan, but do yourself a favor and go with the cummins. Oh and do like i did and search for one without big exhaust and programmers.

The best places online to go and learn about the trucks are the dieselstop (powerstroke) and tubrodieselregister (cummins).

Read up for yourself. then, hit up ebay and craigslist in your area to get a baseline on prices.

Its in fort worth, listed on craigslist and on the other sites that the guys posted up earlier in the thread.

I'm gunna go up this weekend (assuming he's still got it) and try to wrangle a deal, as my work schedule hasn't conformed with a trip to fort worth any sooner than this weekend.

Looks like a nice truck, but you never know till you see it in person. Post up the results when you get back.

I went and looked at the 98 quad cab 12V, and it was a VERY sharp truck. However, there were some things that concerned me, and I decided that, as I don't know as much about a diesel as I should, that I would pass on the truck. I'll probably kick myself later, but I felt like its better to do more research and learn some more before buying something I wasn't completely sure about.

It would be greatly appreciated if ya'll keep your eyes peeled for more 94-98 12 valve standard transmission trucks.
